Land system name: Land unit: Badlands BD3 General description This land unit represents a complex of soil-vegetation associations, which have formed on the dissected landscape sloping away from the scarp land unit (BD2) of this land system. Consequently, small portions of the scarp and areas of ironstone may be present. The soils range from shallow, reddish-brown sodic Kandosols (gradational-texture profiles) and Dermosols (gradationaltexture profiles with structured subsoils) overlying a mottled ironstone hardpan, to sandy Tenosols (uniform-textured profiles with only weak horizon development). Yellowish-brown Chromosols (texture-contrast profiles) are common in the narrow drainage depressions. Eucalyptus melanophloia (silver-leaved ironbark) is dominant on the shallow soils, but E. persistens (Normanton box) and E. thozetiana (napunyah) can attain significant proportions in localised areas. E. similis (Queensland yellowjacket) indicates the location of deep sandy deposits whereas E. brownii (Reid River box) together with an occasional E. camaldulensis (river red gum), are confined to the narrow drainage depressions that occur in this land unit, but are too small to delineate at the current scale of mapping. The shrub layer is equally varied, and, depending on soil type, may contain Eremophila mitchellii (false sandalwood), Myoporum deserti (ellangowan poison bush), Carissa ovata (currant bush), Acacia coriacea (desert oak) and Persoonia falcata (geebung). Ground cover includes Triodia pungens (gummy spinifex), Heteropogon contortus (black spear grass) and Aristida species (wiregrass). Regional ecosystems 10.7.2 and 10.7.11 are predominant, but small areas of 10.3.6 and 10.3.14 are also present. Implications for land use This land unit is highly susceptible to sheet and gully erosion. The soils have a very low nutrient status, with deficiencies in phosphorus and potassium. Ellangowan poison bush is often present. Seepage from the weathered sediments below the lateritic scarp may be saline. Changes in land use or management practices can cause salinity problems. The variety of different soil-vegetation associations within relatively short distances make it very difficult to ensure grazing pressure is evenly distributed, emphasising the need for regular pasture monitoring and, where possible, strategic location of fences. The small areas of river red gum (RE 10.3.14) have an 'Of Concern' biodiversity conservation status*.
