July 2013 newsletter _Layout 1 21/06/13 12:02 PM Page 1 STANTON AND KILLEEN JULY 2013 NEWSLETTER jeni port @jeniport Just finished off Stanton & Killeen s 2011 Durif. Smart new packaging, smart wine and just 12.5% and a splash of fancy oak. 13/05/2013 Twitter WHAT A WONDERFUL START TO 2013! This year s vintage was a cracker. The beauty of wine is that each bottle represents the trials and tribulations of that particular vintage expressing the characteristics of the weather, the soils and the love of the vine. You can read Simon s vintage report on the back page to find out more. Our father, Chris, was passionate about Portuguese Port and had a vision to be the finest Vintage Fortified producer in Australia. He pursued his goal by planting several Portuguese varieties in the early 1990s. In honour of his life (1954-2007) we released The Prince blend in 2008 and 2009 (an outstanding table wine with excellent ageing qualities) using the varieties he planted originally destined for his highly awarded VPs. This year, however, we are very excited to announce the release of three new varietal wines of Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional and Souzão (all 2012). They represent both the traditional and contemporary elements of Stanton and Killeen and are truly superb. Each wine shows terrific varietal expression with unique flavours. They have excellent cellaring potential but if you can t wait that long, they are a real treat over the cold winter months ahead. Once again, our fortifieds are receiving attention on the world stage. Over the last month we have received five gold and five silver medals for our Topaque and Muscat range in the UK through the International Wine Challenge and Decanter Wine Awards. Stanton and Killeen won two trophies at the International Wine Challenge for our Classic Topaque and Classic Muscat. These awards are testament to our commitment to fortified wine, of developing our craft and demonstrate how much we love making these luscious wines. We are exceptionally proud of our winemaker Brendan Heath who has just been announced as shortlisted for The International Wine Challenge 2013 Fortified Winemaker of the Year, along with two others. Congratulations Brendan. As always, we look forward to your feedback and to seeing you in Rutherglen. Each wine exudes individual personality and is an excellent representation of the signature wines Stanton and Killeen produce. The Tempranillo is spicy and rich; the Touriga Nacional is floral and delicate; and the Souzão is complex and chocolaty. Only limited quantities available so be sure to place your order. Tempranillo 2012: Rich and full of spicy complexity, this Temp is both bold yet elegant. It has great length on the palate with bright, fresh fruit flavours and mocha notes. This wine lures you in with its stunning flavours and structure. 14.1%, $58 Touriga Nacional 2012: Each mouthful of this intensely floral and delicate wine reveals a new surprise, leaving you wanting more! Layers of lavender, blueberries and savoury pomegranate reward the palate with a superbly long finish. 11.6%, $58 SouzÃo 2012: Wonderfully savoury and complex, this wine has a deep, rich colour and an impressively long finish. Flavours of blackberries and cherry ripe fill the mouth with delicious, chewy tannins. With great structure, it has excellent potential for long term cellaring. 11.5%, $58

July 2013 newsletter _Layout 1 21/06/13 12:02 PM Page 4 Wine and the Weather I often get asked the question What are the great years for wine in Rutherglen? and reply accordingly; 2009, 2004, 2002, 1996, 1992, 1986 and so forth. Why are there good years and not so good years in wine? Isn t it all made the same way, year in year out?.not exactly. Really, winemakers are just glorified farmers. Viticulture is a form of agriculture, thus, we are at the mercy of Mother Nature just like any other wheat or sheep farmer who lives around us. Some days she s wonderful, other days she s downright ahem. I returned home to Rutherglen from doing a vintage in France, ready for our 2011 vintage, and what a baptism of fire it was! It was one of the wettest seasons on record, comparable to 1993, 1989 and 1973. Most of the fruit was destroyed long before we had even contemplated picking the grapes. We couldn t even spray natural sulphur or copper in some vineyards to prevent mould and mildew growing because the tractors would get bogged. So was 2011 a bad year? No, it was a wet year. The little wine we made from the 2011 vintage was lighter than what we expect from Rutherglen but the wines have more aromatics. They tell the story of what happened in the vineyard that year and that is the beauty of being a small vigneron. Our wines are a true expression of our hard work and patience. For example, the 2009 wines are very concentrated with amazing fruit and chewy tannins. They are a reflection of the drought and the tough times that we faced but with a reward at the end. Each year, we try to grow the best grapes and make the best wines possible in the S&K style, be it in the lighter years or the years that produced fully fruited wines. If they don t make the cut, the wines do not get bottled. Vintage variation is seen across all regions of the globe. It is what I believe makes drinking and exploring wine fun but also gives diversity to our cellars. Use it to build your cellars to suit your drinking habits and preferences. Buy lighter wines for early consumption and full bodied, structured and complex wines for the long haul. Vintages over the years 2013: Dry spring, summer and autumn. Yields down but wines have brilliant colour, tannin and fruit. Great whites, Durif, Shiraz, Port styles and Muscats. Watch this space. 2012: A textbook season with a wet autumn. Wines are medium-bodied, have great colour, aromas and flavour. The best will age for 5 to 10 years. 2011: Rain, Rain and more rain. Wines are light to medium-bodied. Light in colour but possess great perfume and spiciness. Enjoy these whilst they are young and fresh. 2010: Hot and dry spring and summer then the drought broke with early autumn rain. Medium bodied wines with lots of bright, juicy flavours. Brilliant Vintage Fortified year. 2009: Height of the drought. Hot and dry. Deep colours, dense full bodied wines packed full of fruit. The best wines are destined for long term cellaring. As always, I look forward to your questions and comments. Simon Killeen simon@stantonandkilleenwines.com.au
