Open the door to these magic moments of discovery. Enjoy them with your parents, siblings and friends. Science magic in the Kitchen VANISHING FOOD There are huge nations of bugs in the soil of your garden. The given science experiment might just amaze you completely. THE EFFECT You make a bag of food disappear! YOU NEED: * Food waste chopped up small ( use things like meal scraps, onion skins, lettuce stalks, apple cores; don t use any hard things such as bones) * a million bugs to assist you ( you will find them in the garden) TO PERFORM Take scraps of food and bury them in a pit about 8 cm deep. Cover it with soil. Wait patiently until 2 weeks. However remember to water the spot every 2 days. After a fortnight go back to the same spot and hunt for the scraps. There will be no trace! What s actually happening is that the bugs in the soil are eating all the scraps and turning them into compost. If you want more proof that the garden is full of bugs, have a sniff out there after it s been raining. That earthy smell so loved by poets is the combined smell of all their farts, squeezed out of the ground by the falling rain. Page 5 of 8
