FARMS & HARVEST GUIDE IN & AROUND ST. JOSEPH

This is where good-for-you meets delicious. The same Lake Michigan that lures you into its sparkling fresh waters is the reason we harvest a large variety of fruits and vegetables in Southwest Michigan. The lake tempers our climate. It delays our blossoms from budding until after the late spring frosts. Keeps our autumns milder so we have more time to pick before it snows. These good growing conditions are why so many of our farms have been owned by families for generations. Today, dozens of them welcome passersby to stop and enjoy their orchards and fields. See where their food is grown. Give them recipes from their kitchens. Let them handpick the freshest, sweetest, crispest produce and bring it home to their tables. You re invited, too. In and around St. Joseph, eating healthy is a given. The flavor is what s exceptional.

Blueberries DeGrandchamp s Blueberry Farm 76241 14th Avenue, South Haven, MI 49090-9425 phone: 269-637-3915 web: degrandchamps.com Vincent and Beatrice DeGrandchamp purchased the family blueberry farm in 1958. Visitors can taste the legacy they ve left. Pick plump, sweet blueberries from the bushes or ready-picked from the store in July-August. Come in October-November for fresh cranberries. Or stop all year to bring home frozen berries, jars of preserves, sauces, mustards and butters, freshbaked goods, fudge and more. Farm fun: Check DeGrandchamp s website for the one day in mid-october when they give hayrides out to the cranberry bogs and visitors can watch workers harvest a sea of red berries. Starbuck s Blueberry Farm 9245 Gast Road, Bridgman, MI 49106 phone: 269-465-4745 web: starbucksblueberryfarm.com Farm stand open 7 days a week, early July-mid-August This family-owned farm near the shores of Lake Michigan grows six varieties of blueberries including popular Blue Crop and Jersey. Their farm stand offers already-picked berries, jams, jellies and honey. Visit their website, too, for delicious recipes and baking, cooking and preserving tips. Farm fun: Bring a picnic and enjoy a quiet, peaceful day in the country. Check out The Patch s blueberry items: pottery, soaps, preserves, serving trays and stationery. Farm fun: Children and adults find that it s easy to pick blueberries. Avoid the small, hard or white ones. Go for the bigger berries, they re sweeter!
