FRIENDS OF PORTER PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER VOLUME XXIX ISSUE 2 July 2017 The mission of the Friends of Porter Public Library is to foster awareness and strengthen this invaluable resource for the community through advocacy, fundraising, and volunteerism. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hello Summer Friends, Well summer has officially arrived and with it the HEAT!! That isn't deterring us though from preparing for the Ice Cream Social on Monday, July 31. Plans are in place for another familyfriendly event with Mitchell's sundaes, the Big Daddies, the cakewalk and face painting. Also enjoy PORTABLES sidewalk sale, the Book Nook sale and our silent auction. In addition, the Friends of Porter would like to announce that on September 30 we are hosting a fundraiser with Porter Public Library. Please place "Dinner at the Library with our Friends" on your calendar. Many Westlake restaurants are providing the food and Sibling Revelry Brewery and John Christ Winery the beverages. It should be a lot of fun. Enjoy the rest of your summer and see you at The Ice Cream Social, Cathy Schultz President of Friends EDITOR S NOTE: The last newsletter should have been labeled Jan. 2017, not November 2017. Poor editing.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL The Friends of Porter Library s annual Ice Cream Social will be Monday, July 31, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at Porter library. The events for this year include: Mitchell s Ice Cream Get a serving of delicious Mitchell s Ice Cream with toppings for only $1.00 (cost subsidized by the Friends of Porter Library). Cake and Cookie Walk - $.50 Face Painting Musical Entertainment for all ages Big Daddies for the kids Pete Cavano, guitarist, for the adults BOOK NOOK Used Book Room Sale 10 AM-8 PM 2

Portables Gift Shop Annual Sidewalk Sale Friday July 28-9:00 to 5:00 Saturday July 29-9:00 to 5:00 Sunday July 30-1:00 to 4:30 Monday July 31-9:00 to 8:00 Great savings on everyday and seasonal merchandise Special table for children from 6:00 to 8:00 during the ice cream social CALLING ALL BAKERS Please consider baking or purchasing a decorated cake, cupcakes, or cookies for the cake and cookie walk. The Ice Cream Social will be Monday, July 31 from 6-8 p.m. Children and adults alike look forward to seeing (and winning) the cleverly decorated baked goods. We need at least 35-40 items for the 2 hour cakewalk. Pizza cookies are easy to make: Approximately 2/3 of a regular chocolate chip cookie recipe will make 1 pizza cookie (you have enough dough left for about a dozen regular cookies). Spread the dough in a foil pizza pan (or get a real pizza pan at the $1 store) and underbake a little so it doesn t get too hard. Then use your imagination to decorate it, as little or as much as you want. If you would be willing to bake for the Ice Cream Social, please call Lynn Pettyjohn at (440) 892-3928. Baked goods can be dropped off at the library the day of the Ice Cream Social. 3

Silent Auction There will be a small silent auction during the Ice Cream Social. One of the items will be 4 Walt Disney World Park Hopper passes. A BIG thank you to all new and renewing members of Friends for your support of our organization and Westlake Porter Public Library. Barb Hajek, Membership Chair 4

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS Each year I make an effort to individually thank all of our volunteers for the hours of service they donate to help make the February Annual Book Sale such a success. This newsletter gives me a chance to publicly thank them for helping to raise over $11,000 while they donated over 810 hours of service over two weeks. Imagine how many books or audio/visual items that represents!! Some helped by donating food and beverages for the volunteers. Here are the names of the people who helped in 2017. Karen Alfred Fran Archer Donald Bain Janice Bain Marie Beatter Martha Bober Kaethe Buchhotz Judy Brown Judy Budoi Carol Cercek Jennifer Cirincione Marilyn Comisky Sally Crooks Sharon Didion Suzanne D'Ettore Donna Douglas Chuck Duffy Jackie Duffy Kathy Fern Barbara Frase Barb Hajek Jim Hajek Barb Hall Bob Hawley Cindy Holliday Cynthia Keating John Keating Karen Kovac Diane Kvasnicka Alice Lang Alison Laing-Driver Nancy Laing-Driver Andrew Mangels Bob Manly Donna Manly Jim Mann Louise Martynowski Janice Mattingly Pat McAndrews Alice McCarthy Terry McEntire Lona McFarland Judy McNamara Jane Mueller Deb Myers Bill Nordgren Donna Nordgren Karen Novak Anne Obradovich Sue O Neill Karen Ormsby Laura Parry Lynn Pettyjohn Steve Pettyjohn Bob Plantz Maureen Ring Carol Riordan Vivian Rokjalusi Susan Romano Dee Ann Rose Leslie Rozman Nancy Shaw Yvonne Tarase June Thompson Jessica Townsend Jan Voiklis Linda Worthington Victor Zubarev A big thank you also goes out to the men from Community Alliance for their help when we were pulling the boxes of books out of storage, and then they came back and helped us box up the items that were not sold. Their help was invaluable. We also had some great help from the Leadership Challenge group from Westlake High School, under the direction of Kathy McGinty. They did a super job of helping us with the set-up of the sale. I apologize if I left off or misspelled someone's name. If you brought in food or beverages and I neglected to add your name to the list, I humbly apologize. All the food donations were truly appreciated. I would like to thank the hundreds of people who donate their books, CD's, DVD's and other items throughout the year. These donations keep us busy all year long either displaying them in the Book Nook or saving them for the Book Sale. Our next Annual Sale will be in February in 2018. Until then, we have many books of fiction, non-fiction, children's books, CD's, DVD's and books on CD available in the Book Nook, and on the $1 Bookshelf that is near the reception desk, where you can purchase special treasures when the Book Nook is closed. 5
