TOTAL INSTRUCTIONAL TIME INCREASES
CORE INSTRUCTION INCREASES English, Math, Science, World Languages and Social Studies 40 Additional Minutes
ACADEMIC THEORY Additional 40 minutes of instructional time per instructional period 50 minute periods allow for more varied instructional strategies during period Appropriate pacing and cohesiveness of lessons Additional minute of passing time (during lunch periods) reduces incidents of lateness
IMPACT ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT/COLLEGE ADMISSIONS Less opportunity for electives/ap courses Increased instructional time Similar transcript structure Use of Virtual High School (High School Redesign)
DIRECT COSTS Limited reduction in course offerings (11 electives) Reduction in staffing of at least15 teachers and a savings of approximately $900,000 ($60,000/teacher)
ANALYSIS Five of seven schools already implement an eight period day (Livingston & Princeton) None of the districts reported a drop in college acceptances in Baron s top 65 most competitive schools Maximize teacher/student contact time 8 minutes per class and 40 minutes per week 40 additional minutes per day is equivalent to two additional months of instruction ( 40 weeks/40 minutes) All districts made the change to an eight period day at least two years ago
ANALYSIS Increased time occurs in tested subjectspossible increased test scores More specialized program as students opt for subjects of interest
FINE ARTS PROGRAM Impact on Music/Art Program- Art major students will still take advanced art courses but will no longer take 3 rd or 4 th elective Music Lessons- already successful under proposed model
SENIOR OPTION Students taking SO have already fulfilled graduation requirements Student participation should increase since students can no longer opt out of day due to early dismissal
