Tom s Terrific! Since 1929, back when Tom Higley converted the old City Morgue into a burger joint and gin mill, Tom's has been a Phoenix favorite. The place was packed with all kinds of big shots like Governors, Senators, Judges, Lawyers and various and sundry captains of industry. The main attraction was not the food, but a small door leading into a darkened, smoke-filled room, smelling of bourbon, pool cue chalk and stale cigarettes, and housing pool tables. These eight pool tables were where local politicians, judges, attorneys and townsfolk could rack em up. According to Leroy, who worked at Tom s from l943- l977, More cases were decided at Tom s than in the courthouse. Tom s even once fielded a national champion softball team. But Tom's was best known for the pool hall and bookmaking business in the back. By 1977 urban sprawl was all around, commuting was popular and competition tripled, cutting into Tom s restaurant trade. However, business wasn t all that was declining, the old morgue was decaying, the roof leaked, wallpaper was peeling and the building was ready to retire. The original Tom s was torn down to make room for progress. As downtown experienced a rebirth in the late 1980 s, Tom s was reborn. The year l988 unveiled the new Tom s Tavern at One Renaissance Square, about a block and a half from the original hang-out, keeping the burger, chili, spaghetti red and (almost) everything that Tom s was famous for. City council members talk politics, lawyers still meet with their clients, the senate breaks for lunch, and just about anything can happen. A special governors corner can be found in the front where you ll find a reserved sign on a table for four. President Bush and his wife Laura had lunch there with Governor Hull during a campaign visit to Phoenix. Tom s Tavern truly carries on the tradition of Phoenix old and new.
