Amherst County Fair Contest, Exhibits and Show Rules, Regulations and Entry Forms General Rules and Regulations 1. Entries are welcome from all Amherst County residents. 2. PREREGISTRATION of entries is strongly suggested. The official registration blank or a reasonable facsimile will be accepted through August 14 th. Please fax or drop off forms to the Amherst Cooperative Extension office at (434) 964-9404. Entry items and forms may be dropped off at the fair on Thursday, August 16 th beginning at 3 pm. Cut off for entries to arrive at fairgrounds for judging is 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 16 th. No entry items will be accepted at the Amherst Cooperative Extension office. All entries must be dropped off at the fairgrounds. 3. Exhibitors may enter only one article per class, but may enter as many classes as desired. Ribbons will be posted on all exhibits before fair opens on Friday, August 17 th. The stub from the exhibit tag must be presented to redeem for the ribbon. Ribbons not picked up by 12:00 p.m. Sunday, August 19, 2018 will be moved to the Amherst Extension Office. The right is reserved by the Fair to withhold the ribbons awarded in every case in which it shall appear the regulations have not been complied with, or that fraud or deception has been attempted, or where the article is not worthy. Its decision shall be final and binding on all parties. 4. No article will be accepted unless it has a class listed for it in the rules/regulations. Articles entered in Oddity or Exhibitor's Choice classes must not fit in any class listed. (Give a description of these classes on the entry form.) 5. The exhibitors are solely responsible for deciding the proper class for their entry; entries improperly classified will not be changed or judged. We reserve the right to accept or refuse an exhibit. 6. Exhibits must be made or grown in the last 12 months, by the person entering the exhibit. 7. Where any conflict occurs between these general rules and the special rules governing the different departments, the department rules will take precedence.

8. The Amherst County Fair will not be responsible for any accident or injury to the person or property of any exhibitor, spectator, attendant, or any other person from any cause whatsoever. The Agency will provide sufficient security from Thursday, August 16th starting at 3:00 p.m. through Sunday, August 19, 2018 until 12 p.m. 9. The exhibitor agrees to indemnify the Amherst Extension Office and Amherst County Fair against any claim or liability for damage by him or her or equipment. Any insurance desired on any entry must be acquired by the exhibitor. 10. All articles received will be entirely under the control and jurisdiction of the management of the Fair. No exhibitor will be allowed to remove, handle, or rearrange the exhibit. 11. Entries will be accepted in each department on a first come basis. The exhibitor will be advised if all space has been assigned prior to the receipt of an entry. Space will be assigned by the chairperson in charge. 12. If it is ascertained that an exhibitor or person associated with an exhibitor has made or caused to make a false statement in regard to any articles exhibited, or if exhibitor shall attempt to interfere with the judges in the performance of their duties, the exhibitor shall be excluded from competing or from exhibition on the grounds of the Fair. Judging and Department Rules 1. The decision of the judges will be final. 2. Competition is open to all interested parties. Youth is 18 or younger and Adults 19 and older. 3. Awards (youth only): 1st Blue Ribbon, 2nd Red Ribbon, 3rd White Ribbon 4. Contest items may be removed on Saturday, August 18 th beginning at 9:00 pm, or anytime on Sunday, August 19 th. Any items not removed on Sunday at fair close will be properly disposed of. 5. Ribbons will be posted on all exhibits before fair opens on Friday, August 17th. 6. DEPARTMENT A FIELD CROPS, VEGETABLES Please note: any item left at the tent after noon on Monday, along with ribbons/awards will be available for pick up at the Extension office. Items may be removed by department supervisor if deemed necessary. i.e. spoilage Department A Rules 1. Each exhibitor may have only one exhibit in each class. 2. Each exhibit must have specified number of specimens. 3. Each exhibit must have been harvested within past 12 months. 4. Each exhibit must be packaged/bundled prior to entrance. 5. Minimum of 6 different vegetables. DEPARTMENT B Baked Goods Department B Rules 1. All baked goods become property of the Amherst County Fair. 2. Commercially prepared mixes, pie shells, or fillings may not be used. 3. Recipe must be submitted with all baked goods. Entries without recipe will not be accepted. 4. All baked goods must be submitted on disposable plates and covered or sealed with clear plastic wrap or sealable (Ziploc) bags. Baked goods will be disposed of once they become unpresentable during the fair (i.e. Spoilage). 5. Please be aware that items cannot be refrigerated and therefore icing will most likely melt in the heat. 6. Please make sure that you submit the quantity indicated for each category. Judging Criteria: 1. Appearance Shape, Size, Rounded, Even.15 points 2. Crust Color, Crispness, Thickness, Flaky...20 points 3. Crumb Texture, Lightness, Moist, Color......30 points 4. Flavor Taste, Texture, Moist....35 points 5. Total -...... 100 points

DEPARTMENT C CANNED GOODS Department C Rules 1. Foods should be canned in standard glass canning jars (such as Kerr, Ball, Anchor-Hocking, etc.) for exhibiting. 2. Jars must be labeled with type of food and date. 3. There must not be names on jars. 4. Rings should be on jars with vacuum sealed lids. 5. Any jar may be opened at the discretion of the judge. 6. All foods must have been canned during the past year. 7. Paraffin on top of jellies, preserves or jams will not be accepted by judges. 8. Factors to be considered by judges: rusty lids and bands, unclean jars, nonstandard jars, sediment on bottom of jars, foreign matter inside jars, molded food, amount of liquid covering food, amount of head space, uniform pieces, clear liquid, color, etc. Judging Criteria: 1. Quality (judged by appearance)... 60 points (Uniformity (size, shape, and color). Packed full, right proportion of solids and liquids, attractive, and compact, but not fancy.) 2. Quality of Liquid... 30 points 3. Appearance of Jar: Clear, neatly labeled)...10 points Total: 100 points Adult Note: Adult 19 and older SECTION 1 VEGETABLES 1. Green Beans 2. Salsa 3. Pickles, Other 6. Relish, Other DEPARTMENT D JERKY Department D Rules 1. Product being entered MUST NOT require any cooking to be served. Product Must Be Dry Cured or Smoked. A minimum amount of ¼ pound of each entry must be submitted for judging. 2. Recipe and process must be clearly written and included with submission. 3. Each entry must be in a sealed plastic bag (Ziploc or Vacuum Sealed acceptable) with an Entry Label firmly attached to the bag. (Please Do Not staple label to bag, attach with tape.) 4. Categories may be merged at judge s discretion if not enough entries. Judging Criteria Appearance: Does it have an appetizing look? Does it look like you really can t wait to taste it? Aroma: Does it smell like something you want to eat? Or does it have an unappealing scent? Texture: Is it too tough or too soft? Is it stringy or is to overly dry and hard?

Taste: Is it salty? Is the flavor too strong or too weak? How do the different flavors blend together? Chew: Is it hard to chew or too soft? After Taste: Does it leave a favorable taste in your mouth? Overall Appeal: Does it leave you wanting more? Adult Note: Adult 19 and older SECTION I Jerky 1. Beef 2. Venison 3. Other DEPARTMENT F HORTICULTURE CONTAINER GARDENS Department F Rules 1. Any amateur grower may exhibit. 2. Entries must be fresh flowers/herbs only, grown by exhibitor, free of insects. 3. Each exhibitor may have only one exhibit. 4. A collection consists of 4 or more different colors or different varieties. 5. Exhibitors must furnish containers. These containers must be clean, neat, with no labels, filled with water, and weighted where necessary. 6. Containers gardens will be used as decorations throughout the fair.
