WIRT COUNTY FAIR 2018 EXHIBIT BOOK 1. The objective of the Wirt County Fair is to promote interest in agriculture, homemaking and community life. 2. Exhibits will be accepted only from Wirt County residents, students of Wirt County Schools or members from Wirt County organizations with the exception of open livestock divisions. 3. Exhibits must be entered between 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday and are not to be removed before 9:00 p.m. closing day. Prize money will be forfeited by failing to follow this rule. In addition, prize money not collected by 11:00 p.m. Saturday night will be forfeited. 4. The committee assumes no responsibility in case of loss or damage to exhibit and upon this condition only are entries received. 5. In order to enter an exhibit into the fair, the exhibitor must have an exhibitor's number from the fair office. 6. In case of no competition in a class, the right is reserved to award a second or third place, if the exhibit is not worthy of a higher placing. 7. No cash awards outside of those listed. Ribbons only, and only one set of ribbons, given per class. 8. Exhibitors may enter as many classes as they wish, but only one entry in each class, except livestock, poultry and rabbits. Refer to further livestock rules and regulations for more details. 9. In Open and Junior classes, the exhibits must be made or grown by exhibitor. 10. Junior exhibitor is defined as any youth who is a member of a Wirt County 4-H Club, a member of the Wirt County chapter of the Future Farmers of America, and/or other groups recognized by the Wirt County Fair Board. 11. Exhibitors must keep all marks or identity off exhibits until judging is complete. 12. All products of this show must have been grown in 2017-2018. 13. No exhibitor is allowed more than one exhibit in a class in the Horticultural and Arrangement Section. 5. The Standard System of judging will be used. 6. Don t strip off foliage. Groom specimen by cleaning bugs, dust, etc. off. 7. Fresh flowers must be used unless otherwise stated in class specifications. 8. Plants listed on the Let Live section of the West Virginia Conservation List are prohibited from use in the Show. 9. Background, if needed, will be furnished by exhibitor. LIVESTOCK NOTE: Below are the general livestock rules. Please visit wirtcountyfair.com for more information on livestock classes, prizes, and special rules. GENERAL RULES 1. The objective of the Wirt County Fair is to promote interest in agriculture, homemaking and community life. 2. Exhibits will be accepted only from Wirt County residents, students of Wirt County Schools or members from Wirt County organizations with the exception of open livestock divisions. 3. Exhibits must be entered between 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday and are not to be removed before the closing day. Prize money will be forfeited by failing to follow this rule. Market animals will be removed starting Saturday morning of the fair. 4. The committee assumes no responsibility in case of loss or damage to exhibit and upon this condition only are entries received. 5. In order to enter an exhibit into the fair, the exhibitor must have an exhibitor's number from the fair office. 6. In case of no competition in a class, the right is reserved to award a second or third place, if the exhibit is not worthy of a higher placing. 7. No cash awards outside of those listed. Ribbons only, and only one set of ribbons, given per class. 8. Exhibitors may only enter two market exhibits to be shown and sold. Additional animals may be shown in the open class. 9. Junior exhibitor is defined as any youth who is a member of a Wirt County 4-H Club, a member of the Wirt County chapter of the Future Farmers of America, and/or other groups recognized by the Wirt County Fair Board. 10. All animals must comply with health regulations of the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. 11. All animals must be in good health, well groomed and worthy of exhibiting. The fair committee reserves the right to reject any entry not meeting these conditions.
12. The fair association will furnish housing space. The exhibitor must furnish feed, hay, feed boxes and water buckets. Straw for bedding will be available on the fair grounds for a nominal fee. 13. The exhibitor will be required to keep their stall and space in clean condition by removing filth and litter, or may hire someone to do so. Prize money will be forfeited and a $50.00 fee assessed per animal if the stall is not cleaned after the animal is removed at the close of the fair. 14. Market steers must be owned by exhibitors by November 1; market swine by May 1; market sheep by May 1; and all other livestock by June 1. 15. Nonresidents of Wirt County may enter only open division of Livestock with an entry fee of $3.00 per head exhibited and must purchase a Season Pass. All residents of Wirt County will be charged $3.00 per head for breeding animals exhibited. 16. All livestock from Wirt County to be entered must be preregistered at the Wirt County Extension Office (Phone 304-275-3101) by June 1. A 3% per animal and for pen of 3 market rabbits sold fee will be deducted from the selling price. 17. Livestock entries must be controlled by exhibitors to the point that they will not endanger other exhibitors. The Livestock and Barn Committee reserve the right to reject livestock entries which cannot be handled by the exhibitor. All cattle must have double ties in barn. 18. The committee recommends cattle are vaccinated for shipping fever before traveling to the fair. 19. A limit of one (1) baby beef steer per exhibitor. 20. Market livestock exhibitors will only be permitted to sell two (2) market animals. 21. Steers will be divided into weight classes. Steers will be assigned to these weight divisions by a special committee after the cattle have been weighed in. All baby beef entered must weigh a minimum of 900 pounds. The make up of this committee would include a representative of the Vocational Agricultural Department, WVU Cooperative Extension Service and a representative from the Wirt County Fair Association. 22. Market hogs must weigh at least 200 pounds to be exhibited in show and sold at sale. Any market swine weighing over 200 pounds is eligible for Grand Champion and Reserve Champion. Market hogs weighing over 300 pounds will be given the options of not selling the hog or of selling at the 300 pound weight.
23. Market hogs will be grouped into weight classes by a fair committee at the time they are weighed. The make up of this committee would include a representative of the Vocational Agricultural Department, WVU Cooperative Extension Service and a representative from the Wirt County Fair Association. 24. Feeder heifers and feeder steers must weigh a minimum of 300 pounds. 25. Minimum market lamb weight will be 100 lbs. 26. For competition in the livestock Showmanship, the animals must be owned and be shown by the exhibitor. 27. Livestock and rabbits to be sold at the livestock sale must be a project/enterprise of a 4-H or FFA member. 28. Rabbits less than three months old will be sold at the end of the livestock sale in a pen of three with each rabbit weighing 3-6 pounds, if exhibited in the market class. Rabbits sold will be 4-H or FFA member's, enrolled in a rabbit project. 29. Only one pen of three (3) market rabbits may be sold per exhibitor. 30. Exhibitors will be expected to groom their own animal. No professional groomers will be allowed to help. Exhibitors may have the assistance of a parent or another family member (if parent is not available) to help control the animal, but washing and grooming should be done by the exhibitor, 31. A one-dollar ($1.00) per head of beef, five cents (.05) per pound of sheep and forty cents (.40) per hundred dollars of hog sold will be charged to each exhibitor that participates in the livestock sale. These fees go to the check off programs for the Beef, Sheep and Pork Boards. The Wirt County Fair Association reserves the right to interpret these rules and regulations to settle all matters, concerning any part of the Wirt County Fair.
