HEALTHY HOLIDAYS Janet Brown, Dietitian for Valley Senior Services For the final article of 2016, lets end the year on a healthy note. This holiday season, find a balance between maintaining your weight, health and, of course, some moderate indulgences. The following tips are for maintaining your health and weight: Tip #1 Stay active exercise most days park further away from store doors walk the mall take every aisle of the grocery store whether you need it or not! Tip #2 Practice portion control don t skip meals ½ plate vegetables ¼ plate starchy food (size of your fist) ¼ plate meat (size of deck of cards) cut pie into 10 pieces rather than 6 buffets: check all options first, then use a smaller plate. Tip #3 Include more fruits and vegetables in your day have a veggie tray available to munch on throughout the day add vegetables to soups, casseroles and hot dishes prep fruit so it is ready-to-eat! The following recipe adjustments can ease the holiday weight gain: BAKING: In place of butter substitute equal parts unsweetened applesauce (add cinnamon for additional flavor) Use low-calorie sugar substitute (i.e.: Splenda for Baking) Substitute low-fat or skim milk for whole milk or heavy cream Cut ½ of white flour with whole-wheat flour (i.e.: if recipe calls for 2 cups flour use 1 cup white and 1 cup whole-wheat) In place of chocolate chips or candies, use dried fruit like cranberries or cherries COOKING: Use olive oil in place of butter. Use whole grain breads and pastas in place of white Bake, grill or steam vegetables instead of frying Compare nutrition facts labels and choose the lower sodium (continued on page 4) Page 3

(continued from page 3) HEALTHY HOLIDAYS Try this Healthy Recipe this Holiday Season: PUMPKIN PIE DIP 15 oz. canned pumpkin 1/8 tsp pumpkin pie spice (more to taste) ¾ cup brown sugar (unpacked) or 6 Tbsp. Splenda brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla 6 oz. 0% fat Greek yogurt 1/8 tsp cinnamon 8 oz. Lite whipped topping Apple slices or graham crackers (for dipping) Mix pumpkin, brown sugar, vanilla and spices blend well. Mix in yogurt. Fold in whipped topping. Chill in refrigerator until ready to eat. Servings: 12 servings (1/2 cup) With regular brown sugar: Calories: 105, Carbohydrates: 21 grams With Splenda brown sugar: Calories: 82, Carbohydrates: 14 grams To further reduce calories and carbohydrate, cut portions to ¼ cup. Healthy Holidays!!! Storm Policy - Storm Closing Notice There will be not congregate or home delivered meals on days that schools are closed due to storm conditions. The menu listed for that day will be moved to the next day. Listen to KQLX of Lisbon for announcements of services for storm days.
