ChapStick Company Fact Sheet 1880s Dr. C. D. Fleet, a physician from Lynchburg, Va., invented ChapStick or lip balm in the early 1880s. Fleet s original design resembled a small wickless candle wrapped in tin foil. It was not very successful. 1900s - Dr. Fleet sold his ChapStick lip balm recipe to John Morton for $5. Morton's wife made the product in her own home. The Morton Manufacturing Company was born and was quite profitable. 1930s - Frank Wright Jr. designed the original ChapStick logo which is still in use today. He was paid $15 for his service. 1960s - A.H. Robins Company bought ChapStick from the Morton Manufacturing Company. The only Chapstick product being marketed to consumers was the Classic Original lip balm. 1970s - Four flavored ChapStick lip balms were introduced. Olympic Skier Suzy Chaffee, also known as Suzy ChapStick, became ChapStick s official spokesperson. A tube of ChapStick played an important role as a spy tool in the Watergate break-in when it was utilized to conceal microphones. 1980s - American Home Products bought out A.H. Robins Company. ChapStick Sunblock 15 and ChapStick Petroleum Jelly in cherry flavor were released. 1990s - ChapStick Medicated products were released. During this decade, ChapStick s profits were up more than 10 percent, generating $63 million in revenue. 2000s - American Home Products changed its name to Wyeth, which was acquired by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare in 2009. Today - ChapStick consumption is at its height, with its many uses as a natural beauty product. Its most popular products in 2011 ranked as follows: Classic Cherry, Classic Original and Moisturizer. The formula has adapted with time but the mission has continued to be a timeless reminder of ChapStick s dedication to producing a quality product.
