Why 1861? 1861 was a defining year in Broome s history. A new species, the pearl oyster, Pinctada Maxima, was discovered in Roebuck Bay and turned out to be the largest pearl shell in the world. The size of the shell was huge in comparison to any other shell available, and caused a sensation in European and American markets. The average size of the Pinctada shell was six to twelve inches across. The nacre of the shell also had a shimmering interior which also set it apart from the rest. At this time a host of objects were made from Mother of Pearl & it was a valuable commodity, used for many decorative buttons, cutlery, handles, amongst other objects of desire. The Nacre was such a valuable commodity that any pearls that were found in the oyster were viewed only as a bonus. A Thriving industry emerged, based on the humble button.. Within three years, Broome based industry supplied 75% of the worlds Mother of Pearl. It was Pearl Shell, not pearls, that Built Broome!
