Position Description Barista/Café Assistant Context Lincoln University is New Zealand s specialist land-based university, with a mission to tackle global challenges: Feed the World, Protect the Future, and Live Well. Lincoln University operates a number of commercial and trading entities that complement its principal teaching and research roles. Lincoln Hospitality Ltd (LHL) is a subsidiary of Lincoln University providing hospitality, accommodation, recreation and childcare services to students, staff, visitors to campus and a range of external organisations. Lincoln Hospitality Ltd offers a busy and motivating environment to work in, employing over 100 staff. Catering Services provides catering for students (including live in fully catered) and staff of Lincoln University, and supports conferencing and events requirements for Lincoln University and external customers Purpose The Barista/Café Assistant is responsible for providing customers in the Espresso Bar with exceptionally high customer service and care whilst serving quality beverages and food. Key Outputs Barista Educates customers by presenting and explaining the coffee drink menu; answering questions. Prepares and sells coffee drinks by following prescribed recipes and preparation techniques for coffee such as, expresso, flat white, caffe latte, hot chocolate and cappuccino. Maintains inventories by replenishing coffee bean supply; maintaining supplies of pastries, and cookies for coffee bar. Generates revenues by attracting new customers; defining new and expanded services and products. 2
Key Outputs Keeps equipment operating by following manual instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs. Work closely with the casual staff, facilities staff, caterers and contractors to ensure the best possible experience for the guests. Café Assist in the preparation of food orders when required Assist with catering deliveries to customers premises as required Promote excellent standards of safety and cleanliness. Update menu boards daily or when required. Follow setting up and closing down procedures, including cleaning areas in the café. Adhere to cashing up procedures and monetary handling processes. Customer Service Develop and maintain high levels of customer engagement and customer service levels. Creates and maintains a friendly, vibrant and supportive atmosphere in the café. Treaty of Waitangi Support the University to meet its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi. Health & Safety Complies with all Legislative requirements in respect of Health and Safety and Food safety as applicable to this role. Complies with all Lincoln University H&S policies and procedures. Effective customer relationships are developed and maintained at all times and positive feedback is received from customers regarding services provided. Customer satisfaction is monitored and improvements initiatives are recommended to implement as appropriate. Demonstrates, and encourages others to demonstrate, support for the University s commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi. All legislative requirements in respect of health and safety are complied with. All Lincoln University H&S policies and procedures are complied with. 3

Staff Supervised The Barista/Café Assistant is not responsible for supervision of staff Accountability The Barista/Café Assistant reports to the Catering Manager, and thence to the CEO, Lincoln Hospitality Limited. Key Relationships The Barista/Café Assistant is expected to establish effective working relationships with: Catering Staff Customers Other staff and Lincoln Hospitality Wider University staff as required Person Specification Qualifications and Experience Certificate of Achievement in Barista Skills is essential National Certificate in Hospitality (Food and Beverage) Level 2 and/or 3 is desirable Minimum of six months experience as a barista in the hospitality sector is essential Experience working for a not-for-profit organisation may be beneficial Maintains a full, clean drivers licence Skills and Abilities A good listener with exceptional customer service. Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers Ability to prepare different types of coffees and hot drinks Knowledge of how to work a coffee machine Knowledge of food health and safety 4
