From the Chaplain s Desk For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11:26) Paul s description of Christ s final supper with his disciples is one of the most beautiful in all scripture, reflecting on the event also described in three of the four gospels. The event of breaking bread and drinking wine was since named differently in different denominations of the church, such as Communion, The Lord s Supper, or The Eucharist. Each name we use for this sacrament or ordinance brings out a different dimension to it. It is the Lord s Supper because it commemorates the Passover meal Jesus ate with his disciples. The name Eucharist is taken from the original word for thanksgiving, for in it we give thanks to God for Christ s work for us. It is Communion because we commune with God and other believers at the Lord s Table. But no matter what we call it, it is a fellowship of believers by which they gather to remember the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the night when he was betrayed, Jesus himself instituted this remembrance. Luke tells us in his gospel that Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you (Luke 22:19-20). (Also see: Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-24.) As we eat the bread and drink the wine, we should be quietly reflective as we recall Jesus death and his promise to come again. We should be grateful for God s gift to us, and joyful as we meet with Jesus and the body of believers at the table. Since Jesus instituted Communion on the night he was betrayed, I would like to invite you to a Communion on Good Friday, March 30, at 9:00 am at Linden Place and 10:00 am at Fernwood Place. Let us gather to celebrate the remembrance of Christ s sacrifice for us, and the promise of his coming. Ron Babel, Chaplain
