Age Friendly Park Slope

What Is An Age Friendly Business? Park Slope is known to be a family friendly neighborhood filled with strollers, but little attention has been given to the substantial population of older adults, many of whom have lived in the neighborhood their whole lives, others for decades. These are the people who have contributed to make Park Slope the most livable neighborhood in NYC. In fact, older adults are critical economic drivers in today s economy. Most are no longer supporting children or saving for college tuition, so a large percentage of their income is expendable. Some refer to this concept as gray gold. Older people are loyal customers who spend their money where they live. They tend to buy reliable products and are repeat customers when presented with good service. With this in mind, we embarked on the Age Friendly Park Slope project. It is a win-win for both businesses and older customers alike. TWO POINTS CRITERIA Bathrooms available to seniors Discounts for Seniors Place to sit ONE POINT CRITERIA Free delivery Lighting (enough light to read menus and labels) Doors that open automatically or are easily opened Noise (ability to lower music or TV when asked) Products in reach or help is offered Ramp or no stairs in order to gain access Safety warning signs (example: steps, incline) Senior friendly (giving extra help) Signage that is easy to read Wide aisles Eight (8) points must be earned for certification If you are a business owner who would like to be included in future editions or a senior who would like more information, please email us at : AgeFriendlyParkSlope@gmail.com

dsor Shoes FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT US AT AgeFriendlyParkSlope@gmail.com Co-sponsored by Councilmember Brad Lander and Heights & Hills with assistance from Good Neighbors of Park Slope and members of the Park Slope Center for Successful Aging Heights and Hills mission is to promote successful aging in Brooklyn From Park Slope business owners... While not specific to seniors, it s just good sense to be friendly. Manny Mon, Windsor Shoes We try to make the store friendly and accessible and comfortable for everyone. Good lighting, music not too loud, friendly helpful staff. We have a slope at the front door, we re wheelchair accessible. We just want everybody to feel welcome and that we re here to help with whatever they need. Amy Louise Pommier, Prospect Wine Shop It s a responsibility that I take pride in. There is a foundation that existed, there is a culture that existed, and if I could be any part of honoring that, elevating it and celebrating it by serving our elders, then I m all for it.
