Eastern Europe Wine Country: Austria and Hungary 28th August - 14th September 2019 18 day tour Taste, discover, explore Our tour of Austria and Hungary takes us to some of the most spectacular wine regions in Europe. We visit the Wachau Valley with its crisp, dry Gruner Veltliners and also to Burgenland to try one of our favourite reds, Blaufrankisch. In Hungary we visit Tojaki, one of the world s oldest wine regions which produces some of the best sweet wines in the world. We have a private food tour in Vienna, a half day walking tour of the Austrian Capital, we have dinner followed by the Opera. We visit Salzburg and have a private tour of the Old and New Town and also visit Neuschwanstein in the countryside. We head across to Graz which is a blend of old and new Austria and has one of the best preserved historic town centers in Europe. Then onto the enchanting city of Budapest. We take a private culinary tour through the city visiting the Central Market Hall, local butchers and traditional bakers, finished off with local cheeses paired with Hungarian wines by our Sommelier. We also have a private night tour of Budapest which concludes with a boat cruise down the Danube. We also visit centuries old fairytale castles, historic churches, cobbled streets and more on this magnificent wine and food tour through Austria and Hungary. In Vienna, the old coffee house culture and rustic wine taverns stand alongside some of the best restaurants and yet we are so close to the surrounding ancient vineyards where you will experience terroir expressive wines. Hungary s countryside includes some of the most beautiful scenery to be found anywhere in Eastern Europe. This is a spectacular tour and as we only take a maximum 10 on this tour it allows us to experience these incredible countries in an intimate and private setting.

Forget Schnitzel, pork roast or Sacher Torte we will be visiting some of Vienna s finest restaurants and bars representing the Neue Wiener Küche : a lighter, more modern take on traditional Austrian and Viennese dishes. We will have 4 stops, and we sit down to have a delicious meal at 3 of them. This half-day walking tour is an ideal way to get a fascinating overview of the Austrian capital and its monuments. Our experienced tour guide will plunge us into the heart of Austrian architecture, history and culture. Firstly, you ll discover the eclectic architecture of the Ring Road built around the center in the 19th century to replace the former city walls, which is home to the parliament, city hall and opera house. Inside the Ring Road, you ll travel further back in time as you discover St Stephen's Cathedral, Albertina Square, Holy Trinity Column in Graben and the Hofburg Palace. Dating back to the 13th century, this former imperial residence demonstrates the importance of the Hapsburg dynasty. Tonight we will be having dinner then onto the Opera. Day 4 : Saturday 31st August We are all about wine tasting today, as we head into the Wachau Valley to taste some of the country s best wines. You ll learn about wine-making and the fascinating history and culture of the region. During the tour you ll taste a wide variety of the valley s dry and fruity whites and sample other local delicacies such as the valley s famed apricot jams and liqueurs. You ll have free time to explore the medieval town of Dürnstein, a highlight of the region. The town is overlooked by a castle where Richard the Lionheart was once held prisoner. Enjoy lunch in a heuriger, a traditional family-run Austrian wine tavern. This evening is free for your leisure. Meals: Breakfast, Wine Tasting, Lunch (including wine and or beverages) Day 5 : Sunday 1st September This is a complete free day for you. You may wish to see another Opera or wander the historic streets and enjoy a cafe and watch the world go by. Tonight we have dinner as we say goodbye to Vienna

Salzburg Day 6 : Monday 2nd September We head off today to Salzburg, the storybook Old Town burrowed below steep hills looks much as it did when Mozart lived here, 250 years ago. Standing beside the fast-flowing Salzach River, your gaze is raised inch by inch to graceful domes and spires, the formidable cliff-top fortress and the mountains beyond. Dinner tonight will be in one of Salzburg s newest restaurants. Day 7 : Tuesday 3rd September We discover the Old and New Towns of Salzburg today on our private walking tour. We visit Mozart Square, Residence square with the Residence building and the Salzburg Dom. We follow the wafting aroma and discover an old bakery next to a beautiful cemetery of the St. Peter's District. Stroll to the Salzburg Festival Hall, try some local specialties at the farmers market and find Mozart's birthplace in the famous shopping street Getreidegasse. Across the river Salzach, we visit where the famous doctor Paracelsus lived and Christian Doppler was born, who is known for the Doppler Effect. Mozart's Residence is close by and also the baroque Palace Mirabell known for the movie Sound of Music. Our tour ends in the Old Market Square which has been a marketplace since the 13th century. We will have lunch here today in this historic spot. Meals: Breakfast and Lunch (including wine and or beverages) Day 8 : Wednesday 4th September Today we discover some of the most breathtaking palaces in the world. We travel through the countryside to visit Neuschwanstein the utter manifestation of the Fairy tale King s fantasies and dreams and is often referred to as being the most romantic castle in the world. Linderhof Palace, gardens and park are likewise impressive. Together with the most beautiful Rokoko building in Europe, the Pilgrimage Church of Wies, and Oberammergau this tour is as outstanding and fascinating as the eccentric king and his life and the miracle of Wies. Make sure your cameras are fully charged. Meals: Breakfast and Lunch (including wine and or beverages) Day 9 : Thursday 5th September After our big day yesterday you have time to relax and soak in the magical surrounds of Salzburg at your own pace. We take a tractor ride through the gentle rolling vineyards to a lookout point over the lake where you might spot the most famous of the area s 300 bird species the Stork. We get to enjoy a gourmet three-course meal at a lakeside restaurant to taste Burgenland s culinary delights.

Our tour begins at The Central Market Hall Budapest s cathedral of food and one of Europe s largest and most spectacular indoor markets and continues through two of its most charming neighborhoods. We will discuss the spectacular building, the culture of eating and drinking in Hungary, the ingredients, the dishes commonly made from them and just what it is that Hungarian home cooks do with all of that pork fat, paprika, and goose liver. As we walk the market aisles we ll taste a selection of foods (and have an aperitif to fortify us). After a lunch spread at a traditional butcher, we ll head to a classic coffeehouse to sample some of the elegant cakes for which Hungarian bakers are known. We ll be ready to relax over three glasses of quintessential wine (with pairings of local artisan cheese). A sommelier will introduce us to the Hungarian wine regions, varietals, and styles, helping us put the Hungarian wine scene in context. Overnight: Meals: Budapest Breakfast and Food and Wine Tour (including wine and or bevergaes) Day 15 : Wednesday 11th September After breakfast today we have a full day of wine tasting ahead of us. Tokaji is one of the world's oldest wine regions, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This volcanic region produces some of the world s best sweet wine, as well as amazing dry furmint. Stone cellars wind deep under the ground, and its winemakers are passionate about reviving traditions. The wineries we visit are a mix of the traditional, the experimental, and the modern. We ll visit the production areas, wander in the vineyards, and tour the ageing cellars (ranging from 500-year-old ancient handcarved ones to the ultra-modern). Often we ll meet the winemakers themselves. The tour includes a platter of local cheese/charcuterie with one of the tastings and a slow lunch homemade at a winery where we ll see how the regional food matches with the wine.
