Film and History Break with Ian Garden Film and Media Propaganda during World War Two From Sunday the 17th of February until the morning of Thursday the 21st of February 2019 The Green Park Hotel, Clunie Bridge Road, Pitlochry, Perthshire PH16 5JY Tel: 01796 473248. www.thegreenpark.co.uk bookings@thegreenpark.co.uk

From Sunday the 17th of February until the morning of Thursday the 21st of February 2019 The fear of spies and fifth columnists dominated much of the thinking of the Allied and German authorities during WW2 and this was reflected in the large number of spyrelated films produced by both sides during the war years. In addition to examining whether such seeming paranoia was justified, this Film and History Break provides another example of how the truth behind virtually any incident from the war could be twisted for propaganda purposes and reveals how even the most popular and seemingly most innocent of German war-time romantic films could be employed to help the war effort. Following on from the success of this year s Telling Lies during War-Time Break and drawing on much of the research from his last two books, Ian Garden has produced another exciting and wide-ranging lecture course which reveals the extent to which both sides employed the cinema and other media for their own ends. On the British side, the course will include screening of the fascinating MOI short Miss Grant goes to the Door, the careless talk costs lives film The Next of Kin - which Churchill tried to ban - and the short documentary about the famous raid on the River Forth in October, 1939 from which both sides tried to make some capital. Hitchcock s famous American film Saboteur and his shorter Bon Voyage demonstrate how the most celebrated of film directors were drafted into help the Allied war effort. Finally, there is a screening of Request Concert the most popular film watched in Germany throughout the war and more akin to our own war romances. ******************************************** Sunday the 17th of February So as to make the most of your day, feel free to arrive any time from mid-morning onwards. Film and History Break with Ian Garden An Introduction to Ian Garden Born in Muir of Ord and brought up in Linlithgow and Edinburgh. Ian is a French and German Honours graduate from the University of St Andrews who spent much of his life working in International and Corporate Banking, firstly for the Bank of Scotland and then HBOS. He opened the Bank s first office in Germany in 1993 and it was during his three year posting to Frankfurt that he really had an opportunity to indulge his interest in WW2 film propaganda. On retiring from the Bank in 2008, Ian researched and wrote a book called The Third Reich s Celluloid War which was published by the History Press in 2012, and raised considerable interest from the press and the radio both in this country and abroad. In 2016, Ian launched his latest book - Battling with the Truthwhich explores whether either side was truthful in their newsreel and press coverage of key events in WW2 and it reveals a number of surprising findings. Ian is now a recognised authority on war film propaganda and gives regular talks to universities, arts societies, school, Rotary, Probus and other private clubs around the UK, and he has also given a number of lectures in the United States. His sessions at the Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2012 and 2016 were sold out on the first day that tickets went on sale. As a result of the success of those books, for the last 6 years Ian has been running a twice weekly film course on different aspects of war film propaganda at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh over six weeks each spring. Ian ran a very successful break at the Green Park Hotel last year entitled Telling Lies during War-time and is delighted to be returning to run this new course in 2019. More information about Ian and his interests can be found on his web-site iangarden.co.uk
