Cubic Foot Volume Equations for Southeastern United States Instructions Verify that your Project Area is located within one of the Supersections in the table below. Use the equations provided to calculate cubic foot volume for each tree. There is a separate equation for each of the following five categories: saplings plantation planted slash pine and loblolly pine saplings plantation planted saplings of other species poles (different diameter breaks for conifers and hardwoods) saw timber (different diameter breaks for conifers and hardwoods) Adjust the resulting VOLCFGRS (gross cubic foot volume) to VOLCFSND (sound cubic foot volume) by subtracting rotten and missing cull volume in the central stem of each tree. Use VOLCFSND with Appendix J of the FIA Database Users Manual which is titled Biomass Estimation Using the Component Ratio Method found on the Forest Project Protocol Resources page.
