24 TH TASMANIAN WINE SHOW The Tasmanian Wine Show, the regional show for all the State s wines, was first held in 1991, with James Halliday as Chairman of judges of both panels; one of judges awarding medals and one of winemakers providing technical feedback. Huon Hooke joined James to judge the Show the following year, and they returned most years since then, overseeing the growth of the Tasmanian wind industry and to fly-fish the State s rivers and lakes. The contribution of both James and Huon over 24 years has been immense. Huon is now Chief of Judges and James, the Emeritus Chairman, continues his active involvement including the Trophy Presentation Dinner. The third judge position on the panel has provided opportunities for both local and international judges. Also many in the industry have experienced judging for the first time as an Associate at the Tasmanian Wine Show. The ongoing support of our sponsors is greatly appreciated. The volunteers who have selflessly given up their time over many years fully deserve our thanks, and the contribution of Nigel Donachie as Chief Stewart and of the current stewarding team are acknowledged. The tremendous contribution of the Tasmanian Wine Show Committee, plus their partners and families, has been vital for the ongoing success of the Show. The Committee is committed to supporting students making a contribution to viticulture. Amongst other initiative it is offering an ongoing Tasmanian Wine Show Society Honours Scholarship at the School of Agricultural Science, University of Tasmania. The very high strike rate of medals awarded at the annual Tasmanian Wine Show is a reflection of the quality of Tasmanian wine. The Tasmanian wine industry is thanked for its ongoing support of the Tasmanian Wine Show. May the Tasmanian wine industry and the Tasmanian Wine Show continue to grow and flourish over the next 24 years. Cheers! Phil Laing President Tasmanian Wine Show

Very strong class, with an unusually high number of silver medals in addition to 4 golds. Top wine is delicately restrained and refined. Many diverse styles, with several powerful, concentrated wines as was ass the more restrained. The 2013 style seems lower in residual sugar but high in fragrance. Class 5 2012 Riesling 1 Waterton Riesling 2012 Bronze 2 Derwent Estate Riesling 2012 Silver 4 Bream Creek 2012 Riesling 2012 Gold 7 The Barracks, 'Madeleine' Riesling 2012 Bronze 9 Laurel Bank Riesling 2012 Silver 11 Pressing Matters Riesling R0 2012 Silver 12 Richard Meyman Wines "Waseca" Riesling 2012 Silver 13 Pressing Matters Riesling R9 2012 Top Gold 14 Craigow Riesling 2012 Silver Very Good class, Lots of Superb Rieslings, mostly the dry or near dry styles. The few that missed medals either slightly dirty, oxidized or otherwise lacking freshness and charm. A class in two parts; there are the austere backward styles and the more overt, opulent Alsace styles. Some wines simply lack fruit and character. Class 8 Pinot Gris / Grigio 1 Frenchmans Cap Pinot Gris 2013 Bronze 2 Derwent Estate Pinot Gris 2013 Bronze 3 Cape Bernier Pinot Gris 2013 Bronze 5 Eddystone Point Pinot Gris 2013 Bronze 6 Barringwood Pinot Gris 2013 Bronze 8 Bay of Fires Pinot Gris 2013 Gold 11 Devil's Corner 2013 Bronze 24 Eddystone Point Pinot Gris 2012 Top Gold 26 27 42 Degree South Pinot Grigio Winter Brook Pinot Gris 2012 2011 Bronze Bronze Not a strong class, with many bland wines, and many showing phenolic coarseness and lack of palate balance. Class 9 Sauvignon Blanc 1 Nocton Park Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Silver 7 Eddystone Point Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Bronze 12 Josef Chromy Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Bronze 16 Roaring Beach Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Top Gold Disappointing class. There was a big gulf between the medal wines and the rest. Many wines were green and hollow with unbalanced acid and a lack of drinkability. Class 10 oaked Sauvignon Blanc 1 42 Degree South Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Bronze 2 Winstead Sauvignon 2013 Bronze 3 Josef Chromy Fume Blanc 2013 Top Gold 4 Bay of Fires Sauvignon Blanc 2013 Silver 5 Frogmore Creek Fume Blanc 2013 Bronze Winemakers appear to be reserving their best fruit for these styles, as the standard was higher than class 9, with riper flavours and more generosity.
Class 11 Unoaked 2013 and older Chardonnay 9 42 Degree South Chardonnay 2010 Bronze The lack of medals is self-explanatory. Most wines had fermentation faults and lacked fruit. Class 13 2012 oaked Chardonnay 1 Three Wishes Vineyard Chardonnay 2012 Gold 2 Goaty Hill Chardonnay 2012 Bronze 4 Holyman Chardonnay 2012 Bronze 5 Tamar Ridge Chardonnay 2012 Bronze 6 Cape Bernier Chardonnay 2012 Bronze 8 Bay of Fires Chardonnay 2012 Bronze 9 Derwent Estate Block 1 Chardonnay 2012 Bronze 10 Josef Chromy Chardonnay 2012 Silver 11 Rumney Cloud 'Helen' Reserve 2012 Gold 14 Riversdale Estate Crater Chardonnay 2012 Gold 16 Home Hill Kelly's Reserve Chardonnay 2012 Silver 17 Leaning Church Vineyard 2012 Chardonnay 2012 Bronze 18 Bream Creek Chardonnay 2012 Silver 19 Clemens Hill Aurelia Chardonnay Tashinga 2012 Gold Vineyard 21 Puddleduck Vineyard 2012 Bronze 22 Freycinet Vineyards Chardonnay 2012 Gold 23 Derwent Estate Chardonnay 2012 Gold 27 Heemskerk Chardonnay 2012 Top Gold 29 Abel's Tempest Chardonnay 2012 Gold Great Class. A pleasure to judge. The class showcases the great quality of Aussie Chardonnay, of which Tasmania is a leading exponent. It is possible to have delicacy with intensity and palate length! Top wine is a perfect example.
Class 14 2011 and older Oaked Chardonnay 1 Providence "Miguet" Reserve Chardonnay 2011 Bronze 3 Kelvedon Estate Chardonnay 2011 Bronze 4 Cape Bernier Chardonnay 2011 Gold 5 Bream Creek Chardonnay 2011 Bronze 7 Riversdale Estate Crater Chardonnay 2011 Top Gold 8 Derwent Estate Chardonnay 2011 Bronze 10 Derwent Estate Block 1 Chardonnay 2011 Silver 14 Barringwood Barrel Selection Chardonnay 2010 Gold 15 Velo "Willows Reserve" Chardonnay 2010 Bronze 17 Josef Chromy Zdar Chardonnay 2009 Bronze 20 Clemens Hill Aurelia Chardonnay 2008 Gold Tassie Chardonnay does age superbly and the best here are outstanding examples/ But it was almost a class of two halves- They were either very good or not at all. Some of the non-medal wines were over developed. Superb wines, and those with some age demonstrated how these wines respond to cellaring.

A pleasing lack of either bretty or green wines, but the chief problems were over ripeness and excessive oak. A lot of wines are trending towards a big, deeply coloured and very ripe style but they re missing the higher toned complexing aromatics. There s also a preponderance of spicy cinnamon like oak which can lead to same-ishness Class 20 2011 Pinot Noir 1 Riversdale Estate Reserve Tasmania 2011 Silver 2 Pressing Matters Pinot Noir 2011 Bronze 4 Velo Pinot Noir 2011 Gold

Not only were there plenty of high-scorers, but there were few poor wines. We might have expected lighter, more ephemeral wines from 2011, but these wines had good concentration and tannin structure. Tasmanian Pinot makers, take a bow! Class 21 2010 and older Pinot Noir 1 Providence Miguet Reserve Pinot Noir 2010 Bronze 3 Silk Hill Pinot Noir 2010 Bronze 5 Bream Creek Pinot Noir 2010 Bronze 9 Home Hill Estate Pinot Noir 2010 Gold 10 Frogmore Creek Pinot Noir 2010 Bronze 11 Morningside Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010 Bronze 12 Six Friends Pinot Noir 2010 Silver 14 Craigow Pinot Noir 2010 Bronze 15 Richard Meyman Wines "Bersenbrock" 2010 Bronze 25 Summerleas Wines Pinot Noir 2006 Bronze
Disappointing, especially considering the highly rated 2010 vintage. A lot of wines were stale and/or to oaky Class 22 2012 and older Cabernet Sauvignon 2 Observatory Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Bronze 3 Frogmore Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Bronze Class 23 2012 and older other Bordeaux varieties and blends 4 Frogmore Creek Petit Verdot 2010 Bronze 5 Coal Valley Vineyard 2010 Bronze 7 The Bend Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Bronze Class 24 Rose 1 Home Hill Rose 2013 Bronze Class 25 Other Reds 1 Waterton Shiraz 2012 Top Gold 2 Velo Sharaz Cabernet 2012 Bronze 3 GlenAyr Wines Shiraz 2012 Bronze 4 Glaetier - Dixon Mon Pere 2012 Silver 6 Motton Terraces 2013 Bronze The top wine showcases all the good attributes of cool-climate Shiraz without any of the drawbacks; an elegant, spicy, medium-bodied wine. The Tempranillo is on the right track but the acidity needs taming.
