PAGE 2 THE COURIER HY-VEE www.wcfcourier.com SUNDAY, MAY 17, 2015 Refreshed & renewed Crossroads Hy-Vee now has a completely new Wine & Spirits store attached and accessible from the grocery store. Photos by BRANDON POLLOCK / Courier Staff Photographer Crossroads Hy-Vee s deli department has been relocated in the store. Remodeled Crossroads Hy-Vee store enhances community Crossroads Hy-Vee LOCATION: 1422 Flammang Drive, 1 block east of the intersection of San Marnan Drive and Flammang Drive in Crossroads Center. PHONE: (319) 234-7523 HOURS: Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Closed Christmas Day. Since 1960 Crossroads Hy-Vee Waterloo store No. 3 in corporate terminology has undergone a major remodel over the past 14 months. I am proud that we are able to offer our customers a beautiful new shopping experience with a whole new look, says Store Director Kim Jaber. This is the first major remodel in the store s 20-year history at this location, other than refrigeration updates and the addition of a gas station. The makeover encompasses virtually every inch of the 73,000 square feet, except for flooring in pre-existing spaces. Crossroads Hy-Vee s newly remodeled buffet, kitchen and produce areas. From a structural standpoint, it was time, said Assistant Store Director Rob Green. From a community standpoint, it was time. This area is integral to the health and wellness of Waterloo, and for Hy-Vee to be able to come and put the kind of money into the area that we have, it s not only great for us as a company, but for the community, also. The remake started with demolishing the drive-up canopy. Despite enlarging departments and adding a few first-time services under the roof, only 5,000 square feet is added space. Shoppers will enter through a new store front. Inside, everything has been given a facelift and enlarged, or is all new. SUNDAY, MAY 17, 2015 www.wcfcourier.com HY-VEE THE COURIER PAGE 3 One-stop shopping offers convenience, larger selections Hy-Vee is known for its one-stop shopping experience. It s always had its pharmacy, money order and postal services. Crossroads Hy-Vee has enhanced those services with larger and new departments. Patrons will be amazed at the transformations of existing departments, beginning with the delicatessen and cheese section. We went from having a pretty small offering of international cheese to now carrying upwards of 150 varieties, said Assistant Store Director Rob Green. It s truly international cheese, straight from France, Italy, Germany, Holland, among other countries. We doubled the size of the department. They have also added a brand Photos by BRANDON POLLOCK / Courier Staff Photographer The Health Market at Crossroads Hy-Vee has doubled in size. new bulk olive and mushroom bar. The Health Market has doubled in size. Much of the addition is the expanded frozen and refrigerated items. We went from eight feet of refrigeration in the Health Market to 32 feet, said Green. Pretty much the same with the frozen items. Crossroads pharmacy was enlarged by about one-third, including a drive-through window. It operates on a tube system. The new olive and mushroom bar. It is video supported so you don t actually see the pharmacist while you are doing your transaction, but you see them on the video screen, Green said. Hy-Vee has employed dietitians since the early 1990s. Crossroads dietitian Katie Squires, a Columbus High School graduate, has gained new office space in the store proper, making it easier for clients to find her. PAGE 4 THE COURIER HY-VEE www.wcfcourier.com SUNDAY, MAY 17, 2015 RENEWED From page 2 The muted colors preferred by Hy- Vee have been retained, but freshened. Signage has been updated to make navigating the store easier for the shopper. The bakery, meat department, dairy, frozen foods and grocery all have been given an update with the newest decor and equipment. There are several new or expanded departments, including a Starbucks kiosk. The Wine and Spirits store is completely new to this location. Previously, this department was limited to a broad aisle. It now is situated in the added 5,000-square-foot space and is accessible through the main store. New to Waterloo No. 3, and to all Hy-Vee stores in the Cedar Valley, in fact, is the Market Cafe. Patrons order off the menu. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and seats 150 people. The Cafe is serviced by 50 staff, from which six to eight are full time. Most are part-time wait staff. In total, Green says about 100 additional employees have been hired. The store also has two chefs. In place of community restrooms, there are six separate facilities, one stall per room, affording more privacy for the user. A carpeted Mothers Room can be used by shoppers for changing infants, breast feeding or pumping. It s equipped with a changing table, a reclining chair and a television. The second-level Club Room, used for store functions, can be rented by the public. It s equipped with tables, chairs and two 60-inch flat screen TVs. Frozen and refrigerated sections have been enlarged, and the meat department boasts double-decker display cases. An entire aisle is devoted to candy and bulk candy, some stored in gravity feed bins where you can purchase as little or as much as you want. If we re not willing to change and make shopping a better experience for our customers, they will go someplace different where the experience is better for them. We re constantly looking for ideas and suggestions, Green said. Attractive displays can be found in the produce department. Shoppers can purchase flours, grains and more in bulk at these DIY bins.
