AROUND THE DISTRICT Dear Community Members: We had a great start to November with two fun Grandparents Days at Annawan Grade School. We had an excellent turnout and appreciate everyone who was able to attend on November 1 st and November 2 nd. The following week we had a nice turnout for our Veterans Day Assembly. This year s guest speaker was Veteran Jamie Whipple, who is also a police officer for the Annawan Police Department. This was a very nice event to honor our local veterans. On November 16 th, our staff had a full day of professional development during the scheduled Institute Day. The morning consisted of a Poverty Simulation that was presented by the University of Illinois Extension Office. This was a beneficial morning for everyone in attendance. Then that afternoon, the staff did their CPR training and reviewed the steps to use an AED. The entire day was very important for our staff and will prove to be very meaningful for everyone in attendance. Our junior high girls basketball program is continuing to have another great season. The 7 th grade girls basketball team won their regional and will be competing in the sectional on November 28 th. The 8 th grade girls basketball team will be hosting their regional on November 29 th. Both teams have had a nice season and we wish them luck in their postseason. Best of luck to our other basketball teams as their seasons get underway. The junior high boys basketball team is in full swing along with our high school Braves and Bravettes. In other news, the high school s Annual Dodgeball Tournament just collected $210 for St. Jude s and collected 15 toys for Toys-for-Tots. This is a great way that our students are giving back to the community! This past Sunday provided us plenty of snow. I appreciate everyone being patient and helpful as we try to provide safe transportation for our students to and from school. Hopefully we will not have much more snow for 2018. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season! Sincerely, Matt Nordstrom Superintendent WREATH PICK-UP DETAILS: Please pick-up wreaths at the Annawan School hallway east of the Media Center. From Mr. Brau s Office Mid-term Grades The midterm of the second quarter was November 15 th. Please visit our Student Information System for online grading and discuss grades with your son or daughter to see if they are meeting the expectations you have for them and congratulate their efforts. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call your child s teacher at 935-6623. Grandparents Days Approximately three hundred sixty-six grandparents visited on November 1 st and 2 nd. I would like to say a special thank you to the teachers, cafeteria workers, custodians, Student Council, students, and grandparents who assisted in any way to make these two days special for our students and grandparents. Thank you! Supervised Law Enforcement Drill On November 13 th, our staff and students participated in a supervised law enforcement drill that is mandated by the Illinois State Board of Education. This drill ensures safety procedures are practiced for the protection of everyone if an emergency situation would occur. ALICE training has enhanced our practices for everyone s safety and we will continue to develop our procedures. Christmas Programs Mr. Smaga and his students are busy preparing for the upcoming Christmas programs at our school. The following week, on December 12 th, students will be transported to witness where the items are delivered. A letter was sent home to provide you with more information. This has been very successful the last few years and the contributions that are made will help others in our communities. Congratulations to the seventh grade team for placing first in conference play, first in the LTC Conference Tournament and first in their regional. Congratulations to the eighth grade team for tying for second in the conference play and placing first in the LTC Tournament. Congratulations! Good Luck to both teams as you continue your state series play! The boys basketball season is underway and we would like to wish the teams, cheerleaders, and coaches good luck with their season.
