Our philosophy has always been to apply the craftsmanship of traditional European Smallgoods recipes with quality ingredients to provide Australians with authentic Smallgoods. And that s one of the reasons people have grown to love and enjoy our wide range of products. Established in 1947, DON remains dedicated to meeting the exceptionally high standards set and this continues to this day. By initially employing European master craftsmen who then shared the craft from their homelands, we have striven to preserve these traditional methods to deliver our customers that outstanding DON experience every time. Our passion and skill to deliver outstanding Smallgoods is evidenced throughout the entire production process. Over the decades, we have consistently produced Smallgoods crafted with authentic recipes and expertise combined with a care bordering on obsession. 29 30 A SLICE OF HISTORY THE STORY Since 1947, the DON name has been synonymous with ham, bacon and Smallgoods Australia-wide. This recognition stems from a passion and dedication to quality, first instilled by Australian butcher R.J. Gilbertson. Out of a small Essendon store he began producing a range of processed meats that stayed true to the curing tradition of Smallgoods found in Europe, and through this steadfast commitment to quality his business became one of the biggest names in the Australian food landscape, DON. Today DON is one of Australia s largest Smallgoods manufacturers, proudly producing our award winning hams, bacon, salami, franks and continentals from our Castlemaine site in Victoria. We re a leading regional employer and proud of our long heritage and enduring commitment to the tradition of the Smallgoods we produce. THE HISTORY OF CASTLEMAINE The name KR Castlemaine subscribes to a belief that in order to make the most out of something, you have to keep it simple. The KR name originates right back to the 1900s and we re proud to have such a well-established and much loved name under the DON umbrella. Originally produced by the Darling Downs Bacon Co-operative Ltd, KR branded bacon and ham have been enjoyed by Australians since 1911 when the Co-op was first formed. Characterised by country style flavours that suit the Australian palate, KR Castlemaine ham, bacon and Smallgoods bring simple, honest flavours to every meal occasion.
