Barossa Valley 34 BAROSSA VALLEY VINTAGE OVERVIEW Greenock Tanunda Nuriootpa Angaston Truro Vintage report Season 2002/03 was a mixed bag of hot dry conditions, dominated by a single heavy rainfall event with a consequent decline in grape quality for wine, and autumn came early. Despite the difficulties, berries were relatively disease free and ripened adequately in terms of both sugar and flavour development. Several high wind events occurred in October leading to occasional shoot damage, but otherwise spring was uneventful. After a cool start, the summer months were hot, and high winds were still a feature. Vines began to show signs of heat and water stress by the end of January. In late February there were two days of widespread rain, which caused extensive splitting and subsequent berry shrivel in Semillon and Riesling and to a lesser extent in Shiraz and Grenache. After the rain in February, autumn came quickly, bringing cool temperatures but fortunately little rain. April cleared into warm, sunny weather ideal for ripening the last few blocks. A late start to sampling and the compressed ripening led to considerable pressure for all concerned in getting blocks ready for harvest. In spite of the difficulties, some growers had better results than ever before with Semillon and Riesling. The high number of shriveled berries did, however, reduce the overall quality of some blocks as these shriveled berries retained immature flavours. The combination of shriveled berries and winemakers request to delay harvest until development of desired flavours led to high baumé levels at grape receival. Andrew Holly, Orlando Wyndham Overview of vintage statistics Lyndoch Williamstown 0 2 4 6 Kilometres Registered vineyard Barossa Valley GI Region Road There were 48,829 tonnes crushed from Barossa Valley vineyards in 2003 nearly 10,000 tonnes down on the 2002 crush. There was a 6,000 tonne shortfall, made up almost entirely of Shiraz and Chardonnay. Semillon was down by 50% compared with last year, but still showed a slight surplus. The calculated average purchase value of all the major red varieties was down - in the case of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon by over $200 per tonne. The average purchase value of the major white varieties, on the other hand, were up, with the exception of Semillon. The forecast is for growth of around 10,000 tonnes in red varieties over the five year forecast period, with supply and demand being generally in balance overall. Shiraz shows a slight shortfall in each year, and Cabernet Sauvignon an over-supply, which is a reversal of the forecasts made in last year s survey for these two varieties. Shiraz is expected to further increase its share of the region s total production from 42% in 2004 to nearly 50% by 2008. White varieties are expected to show little growth over the next five years, and there is an anticipated shortfall of around 10% overall in each forecast year. There were 402 hectares of Shiraz planted in 2002 - making a 10% increase in that variety and accounting for two thirds of the total new plantings.
