MATURE RED BURGUNDY I recently tasted more than 80 Burgundies from our cellars and feature here 37 that are ready for drinking. The notes and drinking dates are based on this recent tasting. PERFECT PROVENANCE The Society, the co-operative we all own, has a budget set aside to keep fine wines and offer them only at maturity, something that few other wine merchants can afford to do. Most wine companies broker their older bottles, selling wine owned by their customers, or third parties. Our wines were bought at source just after they were bottled then aged in the ideal conditions of our cellars at Stevenage, so have perfect provenance. RARE AND FINE Many Burgundies are made from small vineyard holdings. Most of these wines we offered en primeur, and we then kept the remainder until ready for drinking. As a result, many of them are only available in very limited quantities. We could auction them like Fabergé eggs, or increase the price to reduce demand. We have chosen instead to offer them at reasonable market prices, but realise that demand may outstrip supply as a result, and that some members may be disappointed. There is little we can do to manage this other than offer a reasonable number of them to spread demand as we have done here. Unfortunately, that is the nature of fine Burgundy. Toby Morrhall Society Buyer 2012 High-quality vintage with a cool summer but warm autumn producing beautifully balanced wines that are ripe yet fresh, an unusual and delicious combination. Domaine Serrigny, Savigny-lès-Beaune Serrignyssime 2012 Fresh, vibrant pinot, with attractive red and black-cherry fruit and a fresh finish. Now to 2021. ref RB-BU57521 22 bottle 264 dozen Bouchard Père et Fils, Savigny-lès- Beaune Premier Cru Lavières 2012 Lovely 2012 with the vintage s unusual balance of freshness and ripeness. Now to 2022. ref RB-BU62981 29 bottle 348 dozen 2011 Generally a light year but taste what happens when great vignerons keep yields low. Domaine Henri Boillot, Savigny-lès- Beaune Premier Cru Lavières 2011 Top vigneron Henri Boillot produced tiny yields of just 20hl/ha in this lighter year. The reward was this lovely ripe, soft, full wine. Now to 2019. ref RB-BU52341 35 bottle 420 dozen Domaine Denis Mortet, Gevrey- Chambertin 2011 Ripe aromas of black fruits, with a sweet mid-palate composed of ripe tannins. Denis son Arnaud is using less oak and extracting less, resulting in full yet fine wines. Now to 2024. ref RB-BU51981 45 bottle 540 dozen 2008 A coolish year with tannin ripeness achieved at lowish alcohol levels. It was a little severe in its youth but has put on some weight as it has matured. The tannins have softened and the fruit now takes pride of place. It has very pure and fine flavours and remains a fresh vintage with highish acidity that may appeal more to seasoned Burgundy lovers than those beginning their exploration of the region. Enjoy with your best roast fowl and a creamy bread sauce. Jean-Marc Vincent, Santenay Rouge Premier Cru Passetemps 2008 Low yields means this is quite a ripe and soft 2008, with a smooth, round palate. Lovely. Now to 2020. Domaine Camus-Bruchon, Savigny-lès- Beaune Premier Cru Lavières 2008 Nicely mature as shown by the orange colour at the rim. The fruit has sweetened on the nose, and the tannins are beginning to soften on the palate. Now to 2020. ref RB-BU45221 25 bottle 300 dozen Domaine de Bellene, Beaune Premier Cru Teurons 2008 Light colour and tawny rim indicates maturity, which is confirmed with a round and soft palate in the typically gentle Beaune style. Now to 2022. 12.5% ref RB-BU44571 27 bottle 324 dozen Domaine Denis Bachelet, Côtes de Nuits Villages 2008 Principally from the Queue de Hareng vineyard in Brochon, this is a fresh wine with light, pure, pretty pinot fruit. Now to 2020. 12.5% ref RB-BU45711 35 bottle 420 dozen Chanson Père et Fils Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Mouches 2008 The nose is mid mature, its fruit mingled with forest-floor aromas. The tannins are sweet and the palate is fresh and fine flavoured. The derivation of the name is obscure but probably means worth nothing which is true from an arable farmer s viewpoint, but its low fertility is pure gold for a vigneron. This is an excellent dark, rich-flavoured wine with good grip and lovely sweet, velvety tannins. Very good indeed. Now to 2025. 13.5% ref RB-BU46521 46 bottle 552 dozen Domaine Jean Grivot, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Aux Brulées 2008 A mature orange colour at the rim. The nose is sweet, ripe and lovely, and the palate is soft and round. Now to 2022. ref RB-BU45521 129 bottle 1548 dozen 2007 A light to medium year. Yet there is merit in the old adage for buying Burgundy, choose your vigneron first before village or year. They will make lovely wines even in lesser years. Here is the proof. Domaine Denis Mortet, Marsannay Les Longeroies 2007 Rich, soft and fully ready. Low yields give this a lovely rich and creamy flavour. A top vigneron in a modest year and appellation produces a thing of beauty. Now to 2019. ref RB-BU43671 35 bottle 420 dozen Domaine Georges Roumier, Chambolle- Musigny 2007 Fresh, bright, youthful Chambolle with sweet, pretty tannins. Now to 2020. ref RB-BU43781 75 bottle 900 dozen 2006 Remarkably underestimated, 2006 is a wonderful vintage. Unfortunately it was born in the shadow of the great 2005 vintage and was marketed as the 2008 economic recession began. Yet is has a beautiful natural balance of fruit and sweet tannin. Domaine Follin-Arbelet, Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru Vercots 2006 The wines of Aloxe have a certain backbone, a firm central core like that found in Pommard. They need time to come round. At ten years of age this is now mid-mature, with a firm but not dry palate. Now to 2020. 13.5% Only available in mixed case RB-MX16227. Georges Premier Cru Chaignots 2006 Soft sweet Nuits, stylistically of the Vosne persuasion being situated near that commune. Round and silky. Now to 2021. 13.5% ref RB-BU56841 50 bottle 600 dozen Domaine Jean Grivot, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2006 Clos Vougeot produces firm, muscular wines that need time to soften. The palate here is round, the tannins are just softening and this is entering the drinking phase, but there is no hurry. Now to 2028. 13.5% ref RB-BU41371 69 bottle 828 dozen
Domaine Maume, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2006 Intense, exotic aromas of orange peel, and a lovely soft and sweet palate. This is a super wine and now fully mature. Now to 2020. 13.5% ref RB-BU41491 85 bottle 1020 dozen Louis Jadot, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2006 Made from vines over 70 years old this has a lovely sweet, round and full palate. Now to 2030. 13.5% ref RB-BU41971 90 bottle 1080 dozen 2005 This is considered one of the great vintages of the last 30 years. It had excellent weather, normal temperatures but was a little drier than normal. The wines are concentrated but fresh, with lovely ripe tannins. It is evolving extremely slowly. Domaine Camus-Bruchon, Savigny-lès- Beaune Aux Grands Liards Vieilles Vignes 2005 Made from 90-year-old vines, this has a light/ medium colour with some orange on the rim. Intense, fully mature mushroomy nose and a soft, silky palate. Now to 2022. ref RB-BU36591 28 bottle 336 dozen Georges Lavières 2005 Evolving slowly with youthful, pure pinot nose yet ready to enjoy now. The palate is firm and fresh, with lovely length of flavour. Fresh and fine. Excellent quality. Now to 2024. ref RB-BU37061 39 bottle 468 dozen Domaine Jean Chauvenet, Nuits-Saint- Georges Premier Cru Damodes 2005 Global warming has favoured the wines of Nuits-Saint-Georges. This has rich damson fruit on the nose, and a soft, lush and round palate. Excellent. Now to 2027. 13.5% ref RB-BU37021 45 bottle 540 dozen Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils, Volnay Premier Cru Angles 2005 Lovely blend of pure fruit with mature leafy aromas. Exquisite silky Volnay. Now to 2023. Low stock: three bottles only per member. ref RB-BU37141 45 bottle Domaine Henri Boillot, Volnay Premier Cru Les Fremiets 2005 Deep colour still, born of low yields, with a rich, black-cherry aroma and flavour, with an almondy hint of cherry kernels. Now to 2025. ref RB-BU35581 50 bottle 600 dozen Domaine Gérard Mugneret, Nuits- Saint-Georges Premier Cru Boudots 2005 With intense aromas of maturity, this is a very seductive wine with a burst of intense fruit on the long, firm and fresh palate. Now to 2025. ref RB-BU38251 59 bottle 708 dozen Georges Premier Cru Chaignots 2005 Light/medium colour, still with a red hue. Exquisite, intense nose. Broad, full, velvety palate. Very Vosne-like. Now to 2030. 13.5% ref RB-BU59871 65 bottle 780 dozen Georges Premier Cru Roncières 2005 A mature orange rim, perfumed nose of summer pudding and fine, firm palate. Open, not dry and with life ahead of it. Now to 2025. ref RB-BU36701 89 bottle 1068 dozen Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, Vosne- Romanée Premier Cru Reignots 2005 Mature colour, light red with amber at rim. This offers an explosive nose of intense red fruit, and a generous, velvety palate of great quality. Now to 2028. 13.5% ref RB-BU38291 175 bottle 2100 dozen
2004 This underrated vintage began life with perhaps a week less sun than it needed. After bottling some of the wines developed a curious green note that had not been present in cask. Now the wines below have shed that character and are fresh and balanced. The Cailles and Malconsorts are both quite creamy. Georges Premier Cru Pruliers 2004 Attractive, fresh, firm yet not dry. This is very appetising. Now to 2020. ref RB-BU33091 49 bottle 588 dozen Georges Premier Cru Cailles 2004 Sweet and silky-textured Nuits. This round style is typical of Chevillon, but found rarely in Nuits. Soft and creamy on the palate. Now to 2020. 13.5% ref RB-BU32241 69 bottle 828 dozen Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, Vosne- Romanée Premier Cru Malconsorts 2004 This is a seductive, soft, velvety, creamy Vosne, now fully mature. Now to 2020. 13.5% ref RB-BU34391 195 bottle 2340 dozen Domaine Jean Grivot, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2004 Broad and powerful wine. The tannins are firm, typical of Clos de Vougeot, and the wine is muscular yet balanced. Now to 2026. 13.5% ref RB-BU33111 49 bottle 588 dozen OLDER VINTAGES Georges Lavières 2003 A few wines from this heavyweight vintage will age well. Grivot waited until early September to harvest and the vines perked up after a little welcome rain in this very hot year and seemed to produce fresher, better-balanced fruit. Big, black plummy wine with impressive richness. Now to 2025. Now to 2021. ref RB-BU19621 65 bottle 780 dozen Jadot, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Baudes, Domaine Henri Gagey 2000 Baudes lies just below grand cru Bonnes Mares, and makes a wine that in its youth is quite firm and chunky for a Chambolle but over time evolves from a cygnet to a graceful swan. Intense, pretty wine, with an attractive roundness from a ripe and balanced year. A ripe, round and seductive wine from a warm, generous year.
