September 14th is National Stand up to Cancer Day - One in two men and one in three women will suffer from cancer in their lifetime. Stand Up to Cancer Day honors those who have been affected. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month To help lower your risk, here are some foods to add to your plate: Extra virgin olive oil: loaded with antioxidants and phytonutrients, including squalene which inhibits tumor growth. Adding 2 tbls a day will make food tastier and lowers your risk! Cruciferous veggies: contains phytonutrients that stop the spread of cancer and limits cancer cells from forming. They also shift estrogen metabolism, so the body produces a form that does not drive breast cancer. Load up on broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kaleadd extra virgin olive oil to help your body absorb more nutrients. Dark green leafy vegetables: loaded with folate, a B vitamin that strengthens DNA. Low levels of folate have been linked to increased cancer risk. Choose spinach and kale, and the darker the leaves, the better! Fatty fish: Studies have shown that women who consumed fish oil supplements had a 32% lower risk of developing breast cancer after 6 years, compared to non-users. Fatty fish contains omega-3 fatty acids, which may decrease inflammation. Researchers believe chronic inflammation may encourage breast cancer development. Researcher recommend getting omega-3s directly from fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel at least twice a week. Tomatoes: packed with lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that not only gives tomatoes their redness, but also protects against breast cancer by stopping cancer cell growth.
