WALLER NEWS JANUARY, 2019 FROM THE PRINCIPAL 4 & 5 YEAR OLD KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION: For children who will be 4 before September 1, 2019 and plan to attend the public school 4-year-old kindergarten program in the Burlington Area District, you are reminded to pre-register your child at any of the elementary schools between January 7 th and January 31 st during regular school hours. Please bring along the child s birth certificate for verification. Also for any children that are not enrolled in the current 4K program, and will be 5 years old before September 1, 2019, you are also reminded to pre-register your child as described above, for 5K. NEW TO WALLER * MORNING WALKING CLUB: Waller will implement a new procedure at the beginning of each morning when we return to school in January. You will have the option of going to the cafeteria to get your free breakfast in the morning, or instead of being outside before school starts, you will go to the gym and look for your class line, leave your backpack and coat, etc... Join the morning walk. This will be for All children from 4K, 5K, thru 4th grade. Even if you choose to have breakfast, you will join the walking club when you have finished eating. 4K & 5K students will now also go to the cafeteria for breakfast in the morning, there will be no breakfast in the classroom. SCHOOL RULE REMINDER: When arriving to school, or when leaving after the school day is done, Please remember that we just use the sidewalks and ramps at school. We should not be running through the grassy areas, climbing on the cement walls, or walking on the decorative rocks along the ramped sidewalk. READ TO SUCCEED: Information will be sent home in for the Six Flags Great America Program ~ READ TO SUCCEED! The kids will be able to start logging their reading on January 2 nd. All forms are due back to the Waller Office on Monday, February 11. late entries will be accepted. ATTENDANCE MATTERS: Once again the Milwaukee Bucks are offering the Attendance Matters Program! This year it will run for the month of January. If a student does not miss any days in January, they will be awarded a certificate at the end of the month to redeem for a complimentary Milwaukee Bucks ticket with the purchase of 1 additional ticket. RECESS PROCEDURES: During this time of the year, quite a few teachers get notes from parents requesting that they keep their children in because they have the sniffles, or they are getting over colds, etc. Just a reminder that our school policy is; Students will not be kept indoors at recess time unless they have a doctor s excuse, if they are not feeling good they should be kept at home so as not to spread any germs to others! All students will go outside for recess on days warmer than zero degrees (this includes wind chill factor), so please dress your child accordingly with hats, mittens or gloves, snow pants and snow boots. You might want to also put their name on the label of the clothing, in case an item were to get lost, you would be surprised how many identical coats, boots, snow pants and mittens there are at Waller.

END OF QUARTER: Tuesday, January 22 nd finds us at the end of the 2 nd Quarter of. NO SCHOOL: There will be on Wednesday, January 23 rd. OPEN ENROLLMENT: The window to apply for Open Enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year has been set. Parents must apply between February 4, 2019, and April 30, 2019 ( through 4:00 pm) to the nonresident school district. HOT LUNCH APPLICATIONS: Just a reminder, that it is never too late to submit an application for Free or Reduced Lunch. This can be done anytime during the school year, because we know that a family s circumstances can change. You are however, obligated to pay for any hot lunches that have been taken. Forms are available in the school office. PTO MEETING: There will be a PTO Meeting on January 19 th at 7:00 in the Waller Library! It would be great to see new faces join in the planning of the upcoming events! AM DROP OFF PROCEDURES: We would just like to reiterate our morning drop off, that cars are not able to pull in to the parking lot to drop students off, no matter what the weather is - this is for the safety of all children that may be walking through. Please be sure your child is ready to hop out of the car when arriving at the drop off area, so that the driver can then keep going to let the drop off area flow. If your child is not ready (hat, mittens, coats in place ~ backpacks, lunches in hand) we ask that you pull over further up the street to finish the readiness, so as not to slow the drop off line down. Please be sure to never block a crosswalk with your vehicles, no matter what street you are on. Thanks so much for your cooperation! HAPPY NEW YEAR! VICTORIA LIBBEY, PRINCIPAL! C*O*N*T*I*N*U*E*D*!

Counselor s Corner Mrs. Hoffman Guidance Theme Bullying Our Guidance Theme for the month of January will focus on Bullying. Students will learn strategies on how to recognize a bully and how to try to stop bullying if it is happening to them or someone else. It will be stressed how students can be the first line of defense against bullying, since most bullying happens when adults are not around. Kids are reminded that they need to stand up for each other and give the message to others that we don t tolerate bullying in our school. We also discuss if they themselves have ever been a bully to someone at school and what they can do to change their behavior for the better. Also, please remind your child that if they feel they are being bullied, it is NOT tattling to tell an adult. Please help to reinforce these lessons at home and talk to your child about the seriousness of bullying and what they can do to help themselves or someone else. Waller Food Drive Look for information to be coming home soon on our annual Food Drive for Love, Inc. Each grade level will be assigned several different food items to be brought in. Classes who bring in the most items will have a chance to earn an extra gym class or recess! Important words to remember! Ambassador Projects Upcoming Events The 4 th grade Ambassadors will be holding their annual Carnival on Tuesday, February 12 th in the afternoon. All games at the carnival are designed and made by the Ambassadors. It is a fun time for all students involved and a great leadership project for the Ambassadors. 2007 by Education World.
