February 7 is the American Heart Association s National Wear Red Day. Show your support for this important cause by wearing red, and encouraging others to take charge of their health! *The Senior Center offers free blood pressure checks with a registered nurse the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 10:30-11:30* Life s Simple 7, designed to help add years to your life: 1. Don t smoke- Smoking damages your circulatory system, and increases your risk for coronary heart disease. It also reduces your good cholesterol (HDL) and your lung capacity, making it harder to get the physical activity you need. 2. Maintain a healthy weight-even losing as few as five or ten pounds can produce a dramatic blood pressure reduction & improve health. 3. Engage in regular physical activity-daily physical activity increases your length and quality of life. Thirty minutes of moderate physical activity each day improves cardiovascular health. 4. Eat a healthy diet-a heart healthy diet consists of foods low in saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, sodium and added sugars, and foods high in whole grain fiber, lean protein, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. 5. Manage blood pressure-high blood pressure is the single most significant risk factor for heart disease. Staying around 120/80 will keep you in the healthy range, and reduce your risk. 6. Take charge of cholesterol- If your cholesterol is 200 mg/dl or higher, you need to take action. Eat healthy foods that are low in cholesterol, Schedule a cholesterol screening and stay current on your health check-ups. 7. Keep blood sugar, or glucose, at healthy levels-lowered blood sugar helps protect your vital organs. When you reduce excessive sugars, you are giving yourself the best chance for a healthy life.
