CONTRIBUTION TO THE CHOROLOGY OF GENUS LATHYRUS (FABACEAE) IN BULGARIA A. Tosheva 1, K. Pachedjieva 1 and B. Sidjimova 2 1 Sofia University St. Klmient Ohridski, Faculty of Biology, Department of Botany, 8 Dragan Tzankov Blvd., 1164 Sofia, Bulgaria; 2 Institute of Бotany, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Correspondence to: Anita Tosheva E-mail: atosheva@biofac.uni-sofia.bg ABSTRACT The data on the distribution in Bulgaria of the species from genus Lathyrus were summarized and revised. The collections from the main Bulgarian Herbariums SO, SOM and SOA were checked. New chorological data for 10 taxa were found: L. annuus, L. inconspicuus, L. pannonicus, L. sativus, L. setifolius, L. venetus, L. digitatus var. puberulus, L. latifolius var. brachypterus, L. sylvestris var. platyphуllos, L. venetus var. grandis. The taxon L. inconspicuus var. inconspicuus is reported as a new one for the Bulgarian flora. Keywords: chorology, Lathyrus, Bulgaria Baumg, L. pratensis L. and L. laxiflorus (Desf.) Kuntze). The other 5 sections are represented only by annual species: section Linearicarpus (L. inconspicuus L., L. sphaericus Retz.), section Orobastrum (L. setifolius L.), section Viciopsis (L. saxatilis (Vent.) Vis.), section Aphaca (L. aphaca L.) and section Nissolia (L. nissolia L.), Introduction The genus Lathyrus L. (Fabaceae) is a part of a tribe Vicieae (Adans.) DC and comprises about 150 species mainly distributed in Europe, Asia and North and South America and tropical East Africa (5). The interest in the species from genus Lathyrus is a result of their usage as a forage, honey, medicine and decorative plants. According to these valuable features some of the species are cultivated and others are important components of the pasture vegetation. In the Bulgarian flora the genus Lathyrus is represented by 30 species (8), related to 9 sections (6). The section Lathyrus is presented by 8 species 4 perennial (L. grandiflorus Sibth. et Sm., L. latifolius L., L. sylvestris L., L. tuberosus L.) and 4 annual (L. annuus L., L. cicera L., L. hirsutus L., L. sativus L.). The section Orobus is represented by 8 perennial species (L. alpestris (W. et K.) Kit., L. aureus (Stev.) Brandza, L. linifolius (Reich.) Bässler, L. niger (L.) Bernh, L. palustris L., L. transsilvanicus (Spreng.) Reichenb. fil., L. venetus (Mill.) Wohls., L. vernus (L.) Bernh.). The section Lathyrostylis comprises 5 perennial species (L. digitatus (M. Bieb.) Fiori, L. filiformis (Lam.) Gay, L. pallescens (M. Bieb.) K. Koch, L. pancicii (Jurišić) Adamović and L. pannonicus (Jacq.) Garcke). The section Pratensis is presented by 3 perennial species (L. hallersteinii 67 The species L. alpestris and L. pancicii are endemic for the Balkan Peninsula. Six species (L. alpestris, L. linifolius, L. palustris, L. transsilvanicus, L. pancicii and L. saxatilis) are under protection as threatened by the Biodiversity Act. In the main generalizing editions for the Bulgarian flora chorological data are pointed for the species of genus Lathyrus L. concerning mainly their distribution according to floristic regions and altitude (1, 3, 4, 7). In the course of the biosystematical survey of the species from genus Lathyrus distributed in Bulgaria, new chorological data were found for L. annuus, L. inconspicuous, L. pannonicus, L. sativus, L. setifolius, L. venetus, L. digitatus var. puberulus (Jordanov) Kožuharov, L. inconspicuus var. inconspicuous, L. latifolius var. brachypterus (Alef.) Kožuharov, L. sylvestris var. platyphуllos (Retz.) Asch., L. venetus var. grandis Velen. Materials and methods The information for the distribution of the studied species is based on the available literature data and specimens

deposited in the Herbaria of Sofia University (SO) and Institute of Botany at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (SOM), the Herbarium at the Agricultural University, Plovdiv (SOA) and in personal collection. The localities is indicated on an UTM Grid map of Bulgaria (Scale 1: 1 500 000, 10 km square) (Fig. 1-6). This distribution is presented according to the floristic division of Bulgaria by Jordanov (2). The floristic elements follow Assyov and Petrova (1). Results and Discussion The available data on the distribution of the species were summarized and revised in the present research. The collections from main Bulgarian Herbariums SO, SOM and SOA were checked. In the course of the survey new chorological data for 10 taxa were found. The taxon L. inconspicuus var. inconspicuus is a new for the Bulgarian flora.
