NAPOLEONIC SCENARIOS CASTIGLIONE - 1796 V1 BACKGROUND In late July 1796 Wurmser has marched columns down the E and W side of Lake Garda in an attempt to relieve Napoleon s siege of Mantua. Napoleon breaks the siege, moves W and defeats Quasdanovich at Lonato on 3 rd August on the SW corner of the lake. Wurmser heads for Mantua, relieves the siege on 1 st August, but thinks better of staying there after Quasdanovich s defeat and turns to meet Napoleon who is heading E towards him and threatening Wurmser s Lines of Communication. Wurmser sets up a defensive position on the ridge by Solferino, just W of the River Mincia to meet Napoleon on 5 th August. AIMS French: 1) Destroy the Austrian Army. Allies: 2) Destroy the French Army, or if not possible retire to the E or NE without significant damage. TERRAIN (looking SE) Left: Ridge line running from close to far, ground high and broken to the N, then falling back away. Village of Solferino in the far distance. Centre: Lower slope of ridge and the Castiglione to Mantua road, giving way S to open plain. Right: Open plain with the small Monte Medolano hill in the far distance.
