The descendants of these Sino-Malay marriages became known as Straits Chinese or Peranakan and their way of life, language, food customs and dressing have become ask amalgamation of Chinese and Malay and develop a style uniquely their own. The ladies are called Nyonya and the men Baba. The basic essentials in Nyonya cooking are lemon grass, galangal, coconut milk, chillies and limes as well as palm sugar, glutinous rice flour and screw pine leaves.
