Finger Lakes Seneca Lake AVA Finely Crafted Finger Lakes Wines It Begins With PASSIon & Premium VineYARDS The Missick family, originally hailing from California, left behind successful careers in construction and law to craft authentic, distinct, and exciting texture-driven cool climate wines in the rural and beautiful Finger Lakes. Building on the 150 year history of wine grape growing at the property, the Missick family has assembled a collection of diverse sites, most under 10 acres, on the West side of Seneca Lake from which their wines are made. Bellanglo is a boutique wine producer, crafting only 6,000 cases of wine each vintage, Riesling: Authenticity and Texture With loamy soils deposited by Ice Age glaciers, serving as the top soil to the base of Devonian black shale, the remarkable geology of the Finger Lakes is matched only by its stark climatoligcal contrast where seasons are moderated by our deep glacially carved lakes. At Bellangelo, winemaking is approached as an art, with diverse vineyard sites and a myriad of fermentations that contribute to a broad palette from which we craft our Rielsing. We craft dozens of a small batch Rieslings fermented in a variety of mediums: from neutral barrels, stainless steel tanks, and fermenting eggs, emphasizing lees contact and autochthonous fermentation. Fruit, freshness, distinct herbal qualities, and bright acidity coalesce with texture and weight that define Bellangelo s Riesling. Although Riesling is our passion, we proudly make wines from several other varietals that express the region beautifully. It s a good thing that the vintners of New York s Finger Lakes are embracing Riesling more and more. Even in tough and cool years, such as 2013, the grape ripens well. As the region continues to slowly but steadily improve, a single vineyard craze has been embraced, with vintners now producing a greater number of bottlings, albeit with sometimes ridiculously small production levels. This might not be the way to break out into wider consumer acceptance (prices tend to creep up on these wines as well) but it does help expose the terroir of the Finger Lakes, where the moderating effects of the various long, slender but deep lakes and the varying shale and gravel soils provide ample opportunities for making quality wine. Tom Higgins Heart & Hands winery leads this group of offerings. He started his winery, located on the eastern side of Cayuga Lake, in 2006, and his single vineyard Rieslings typically show bright green almond, talc and floral notes, with very pure, stony finishes. The Patrician Verona Vineyard bottling, from a site located on the west side of Cayuga Lake, tends to deliver more ripeness, a benefit in the tricky 2013 vintage. Forge is a joint venture led by Rhône vigneron Louis Barruol of Château de St. Cosme, in Gigondas. Its debut 2011 was outstanding, showing what a little outside know how can bring to a region where quantity still tends to hold sway over quality. The new 2013 bottling is nearly as good, with bracing, tangy fennel and apple skin notes. If you haven t tried Finger Lakes Rieslings yet, the 2013 Dry bottling from Keuka based Dr. Konstantin Frank is an ideal start, priced right and with ample case production. From Atwater comes a fresh, lively and long 2013 Riesling.
