PRESENT PERFECT One of the many advantages afforded by being a member-owned mutual is our deliberate policy of holding back stock to offer to our members when they are ready to drink. We tasted a large number of Burgundies recently and those judged most ready for drinking were chosen for this offering. The result is a wide spread of vintages from the superb 2012s back to 2000 (the great 2010 s absence is because the majority of these wines remain rather closed at present). Buy by the bottle, by the case, or enjoy a cross-section of ready-for-drinking Burgundies via three mixed cases, available with savings to encourage members to explore the range available. This quartet from the excellent Domaine Serrigny demonstrates how some delightful wines from lower down the vineyard hierarchy are just beginning to show their quality. Domaine Serrigny, Savigny-lès-Beaune 2012 Serrigny is a domaine we have recently started buying from run by two sisters Francine and Marie-Laure, who took over in 1995 after their father passed away. Their wines - aged for 18 months in pièces (small oak barrels) and filtered before bottling are notable for their exquisite, gentle texture and their length of flavour. This impressive village Savigny offers refreshing, sappy pinot fruit and sweet, rounded tannins. Now to 2020. 13% ref RB-BU57531 19.50 bottle 234 dozen NEW Domaine Serrigny, Savigny-lès- Beaune Serrignyssime 2012 Serrignyssime is a cuvée selected from their best situated and oldest parcels of village vineyards which comprise Aux Fournaux, Les Pimentiers, Les Grands Picotins and Les Petits Picotins. This equates to 1.2ha and the vines average 60 years. A little extra weight and concentration than the village bottling above. Now to 2021. 13% ref RB-BU57521 22 bottle 264 dozen NEW Domaine Serrigny, Savigny-lès- Beaune Premier Cru Peuillets 2012 Premier Cru Peuillets has vines of between 25 and 80 years of age and faces east to north-east. The soil is gravelly with limestone, and produces a balanced and powerful wine. Now to 2021. 13% ref RB-BU57541 25 bottle 300 dozen NEW Domaine Serrigny, Savigny-lès- Beaune Premier Cru Dominode 2012 Dominode comes from 90-year-old vines and faces east to north-east, and is planted on sandy soils which, with the old vines, gives a beautifully silky wine, gentle in the mouth yet with a long, persistent finish. Now to 2023. 13% ref RB-BU57511 26 bottle 312 dozen 2011 A ripe vintage of medium concentration and length. Many of the wines are delicious now and will give a lot of pleasure in the medium term. Sylvain Pataille is a star who keeps yields very low and asks modest prices for the quality. Domaine Sylvain Pataille, Marsannay Les Longeroies 2011 Longeroies is a top Marsannay vineyard, in line for premier cru recognition, and has an extra richness due to its superior ripening ability. 2009 A vintage that stood out in our tastings as one of the most appealing to drink now. It s a very ripe year, so the tannins are soft and sweet and the aromas are now in full flower. Despite the heat experienced by the vines, the wines terroirs are still well defined. Jean-Marc & Anne-Marie Vincent, Santenay Rouge Premier Cru Passetemps 2009 A broad, rich, meaty pinot, ample and soothing. From a premier cru vineyard planted to 14,000 vines per hectare (10,000 is standard) which encourages deeper rooting of the plants and a smaller yield per plant which is beneficial for quality, but increases the grower s workload. Now to 2018. 13% ref RB-BU47091 24 bottle 288 dozen Domaine de Bellene, Beaune Premier Cru Teurons 2009 Sweet, rounded and fruity Beaune from a premier cru in the heart of the commune that delivers elegant, supple wines. Now to 2017. 13.5% ref RB-BU46341 32 bottle 384 dozen Domaine Henri Boillot, Savigny-lès- Beaune Premier Cru Lavières 2009 Ripe, opulently flavoured wine. You can taste the concentration borne of low yields and grapes basking in the sun. Now to 2018. 13% ref RB-BU47181 37 bottle 444 dozen Domaine Alain Burguet, Gevrey- Chambertin 2009 From a high-quality domaine producing rich wines. Powerful, round, sweet-textured Burgundy from mature vines harvested when fully ripe. Now to 2024. 13% ref RB-BU48211 39 bottle 468 dozen Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils, Volnay Premier Cru Brouillards 2009 Intense, fully open nose, followed by a sweet and silky textured palate. A lovely sensuous Volnay. Now to 2021. 13% ref RB-BU48521 42 bottle 504 dozen Comte Armand Domaine des Epeneaux, Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux 2009 About 43hl/ha produced, which is a large crop here! Undoubtedly powerful, yet it wears its richness lightly, with lovely ripe tannins. Its plump palate is supported by considerable grip and structure. This has the structure to age further and develop beautifully. Now to 2028. 13.5% ref RB-BU47971 66 bottle 792 dozen Domaine Maume, Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru 2009 Maume was one of the standout domaines in this tasting. Sensational nose combining the ripe scent of maturing pinot noir mingling with vanilla from the oak. The palate is rich and creamy with notes of griotte or morello cherries on the finish. Now to 2028. 13.5% ref RB-BU47511 95 bottle 1,140 dozen Domaine Dujac, Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru 2009 Remarkably fresh for a 2009, aided in this regard perhaps by the use of whole-bunch fermentation that is practised here. An excellent Morey-Saint- Denis with a fine and elegant palate. Now to 2024. 13% ref RB-BU48971 99 bottle 1,188 dozen Domaine Dujac, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Combottes 2009 Deep, rich black-fruit nose with pretty, sweet fruit starting to mature. A full sumptuous palate but no excess. Now to 2028. 13.5% ref RB-BU48951 169 bottle 2,028 dozen
2008 2008 was a cooler year, with wines that offer firm black-cherry fruit character, and which are just starting to relax their grip and open up. The wine from Maume is harvested very late so is atypically ripe for the year. Domaine Camus Bruchon, Savigny-lès- Beaune Premier Cru Narbontons 2008 Fresh blackberry and black-cherry fruit aromas, with firm, taut palate just beginning to soften. Now to 2018. 13% ref RB-BU45231 25 bottle 300 dozen Domaine Maume, Gevrey-Chambertin en Pallud 2008 As ever, what sets Maume apart is the quality of work in the vineyard, and the significant age of the vineyards, which produce concentrated and healthy grapes. In the cellar, they mature their wines for a relatively long period, 18-20 months in barrel, producing a soft and richtasting style of Gevrey. This has an intense pinot nose and a round and full palate, because it was picked late and ripe, and a powerful finish. Excellent. Now to 2020. 13.5% ref RB-BU45561 35 bottle 420 dozen 2006 Born in the shadow of the great 2005 and sold in 2008 at the beginning of the financial crisis, 2006 has been hugely underestimated. It s a beautiful vintage with fruit, tannin and acidity harmoniously balanced and proportionate. With the 2009 vintage, this produced some of the best wines in the offer. Domaine Denis Mortet, Marsannay Longeroies 2006 A big wine in the Mortet style: deep in colour and with a very ripe, sweet and intense nose, leading to an opulent yet balanced palate. Now to 2020. 13.5% ref RB-BU40061 30 bottle 360 dozen Domaine Denis Bachelet, Gevrey- Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2006 Denis Bachelet s wines are never the biggest and most powerful but can astonish with their intense and graceful style. He is a wonderful vigneron with old vines. That s where it starts and finishes. This excellent 2006 has a maturing pinot nose combined with attractive vanilla from the oak. A concentrated palate, owing to low yields, which is round, ripe and full. Now to 2025. 13% ref RB-BU42281 39 bottle 468 dozen Domaine Chandon de Briailles, Corton Bressandes Grand Cru 2006 Made from four different plots totalling 1.8ha and made with 80% whole bunches. The wholebunch method produces wines of light colour which are austere in their youth but develop a lovely perfume at maturity. Really intense nose and a palate that is very refined and silky, offering a delicate sweetness. Delicious but will still improve. Now to 2022. 13% ref RB-BU40581 49 bottle 588 dozen Domaine Robert Chevillon, Nuits-Saint- Georges Premier Cru Vaucrains 2006 Big, broad, meaty pinot. Dense and structured, but just starting to open up now. Now to 2024. 13.5% ref RB-BU40671 65 bottle 780 dozen Comte Armand, Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux 2006 Still a very deep colour, and a nose that is intense and fresh. This wine is just emerging from its tannic cocoon. A precise and linear wine with excellent length of flavour. Now to 2024. 13% ref RB-BU42201 69 bottle 828 dozen Domaine Maume, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2006 Light colour. Exotic, intense, mature pinot noir nose with hints of orange peel. Soft, sweet and rich on the palate, and absolutely ready now. Superb. Now to 2020. 13.5% ref RB-BU41491 89 bottle 1,068 dozen To order thewinesociety.com/redburgundy 01438 740222
2005 The great 2005 vintage was always going to be a keeper but, like 1999, the wines have evolved even more slowly than predicted. They are not blockbusters, the style being one of elegance and intensity. The lesser wines are starting to be approachable, but have such innate balance they will long remain on a plateau of drinkability before very slowly declining. We will continue to hold wines further up the hierarchy and release these to members when they are ready. Nicolas Potel, Santenay Premier Cru Clos Rousseau 2005 Deeply coloured wine with an intense, ripe and meaty nose. A rich, broad and powerful example of this superb vintage. Now to 2022. 13.5% ref RB-BU35751 20 bottle 240 dozen Domaine Camus Bruchon, Savigny-lès- Beaune Premier Cru Lavières 2005 Lovely ripe nose with a hint of brown sugar. The tannins have softened to a lovely sweetness and the palate is still fresh. Now to 2021. 13% ref RB-BU36571 20 bottle 240 dozen Domaine Jean Chauvenet, Nuits-Saint- Georges 2005 This ripe and plummy pinot needed a long time to come round but it is now shedding its tannins and revealing a sweet core of fruit. Made from just 40hl/ha. Now to 2023. 13% ref RB-BU37001 29 bottle 348 dozen Domaine Alain Burguet, Gevrey- Chambertin Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes 2005 Opulent is the word to describe this dense and velvet-textured wine. Made from low yields of late-harvested grapes coming from about 20 parcels of vines over 60 years of age. Now to 2030. 13% ref RB-BU38501 42 bottle 504 dozen 2003 One of the earliest and hottest vintages in the last 500 years, 2003 was for the most part a damage limitation exercise to harvest the grapes before they shrivelled. However, in a handful of cases, such as in the cooler Côte de Nuits, it was possible to wait until after some very welcome rain fell at the end of August. The vines perked up and seemed to produce better-balanced grapes. The Grivot below is outstanding. Domaine Jean Grivot, Nuits-Saint- Georges Premier Cru Pruliers 2003 Harvested after the great heat had abated, this is an excellent 2003, unusually big and rich for Burgundy yet neither raisiny nor dry. It is underscored by ripe tannins which support its formidable density and power and will ensure it of a great future. May resemble the legendary long-lived 1947 Burgundies. Now to 2030. 13% ref RB-BU28751 49 bottle 588 dozen 2002 A brillliant Burgundy vintage: consistent throughout the hierarchy, from basic Bourgogne to Grand Cru. Berries were small and thick skinned with plenty of colour and round, succulent tannins. Chambolle-Musigny Les Véroilles, Domaine Bruno Clair 2002 This vineyard, situated just above the grand cru of Bonnes-Mares, produces fragrant lacy reds. Now fully mature, this wine has a light colour and a gentle, sensuous, silky palate. Now to 2017. 13% ref RB-BU24151 39 bottle 468 dozen 2000 2000 is a rich and ripe vintage in the Côte de Nuits with a velvety, caressing embrace. We include one delicious example below from Jadot. Louis Jadot, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Baudes 2000 Quite a broad wine for Chambolle, situated just below Bonnes Mares, with commensurate richness from this lovely ripe vintage. Now sporting an appealing, mature, farmyardy aroma. Now to 2024. 13.5% ref RB-BU18291 49 bottle 588 dozen
