ZAGORI Natural Mineral Water is concentrated beneath the surface of the earth in natural aquifer basins, on the slopes of the Pindos mountain range, in one of the most picturesque, protected and pristine areas of Greece, the Zagorohoria area. During the long "journey" into the underground layers of the soil, the water undergoes the changes in his physical and chemical composition, acquiring its unique characteristics. Its balanced and unaltered composition is a product of natural absorption of the metallic elements from the geological formations that it encounters in its path to the source. There, at the foot of the Mitsikeli mountain range, protected from any external influence and pollution of the environment, it is picked up and promoted for direct bottling, directly from the source. Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece at 9,577 ft. It is located in the Olympus Range on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia. The highest peak Mytikas, meaning nose, is known as the Home of the Olympian Gods in ancient Greek Mythology. The southeastern slopes of Mount Olympus are the perfect nest for the picturesque village of Rapsani, home to a long line of vine growers. The very first mentions for the local thessalikon wine, good health and strength preparatory are traced in Theokritos, creator of ancient Greek bucolic poetry, in 300bC, while during Byzantine times viticulture was among the basic occupations of the locals. It was in the beginning of 1800s when Edward Daniel Clarke, an English naturalist, mineralogist and traveler, visited the area and described the local red wine as the best flavoured of any we tasted in Greece, while a few decades later, in 1840, Ami Boué, an Austrian pioneer geologist working on his Ethnographic Map of the Balkans, mentioned the region for its excellent vineyards. Almost a century later, in 1932, the fame of the Rapsani wine led the Greek state to officially recognize it as an Appellation wine. From 10 hectares of vineyards in 1991, today the total Tsantali Rapsani vineyards reach almost 90 hectares in total. The Tsantali family proudly carries on the Rapsani PDO legacy with a trilogy of wines. Rapsani, Rapsani Reserve and Rapsani Grande Reserve are among the most acclaimed wines of Greece worldwide. The elements that differentiate the wines of the trilogy are: the altitude of the vine parcels the maturation-ageing period. The blend in all wines according to Rapsani PDO legislation are the same: co-vinification of 1/3 equally Xinomavro, Krassato and Stavroto grapes. Philosophy With respect for Nature and Man, we create wines that reflect the terroirs and the grape varieties which spawned them. Dimitris Hatzimichalis is the founder and Managing Director of Domaine Hatzimichalis, located in Atalanti Valley of Central Greece. At the age of 19, Dimitris made his first wine in his house yard and later continued his passion with functioning a small wine press in the premises of his family business and studying the history of wine. His love for vine and wine culture, inspired him to buy his first 9 hectares in Atalanti Valley in 1973. The selection of this land was based on the unique microclimate that exists in the area. The cool breezes of Mount Parnassus and the Sea aura of the Eubean gulf meet and form an ideal ecosystem for the growing of wine grape vines, acting like a natural airconditioning. These characteristics along with the viticulture tradition of Atalanti, convinced him to invest in this land and fulfill his dreams. Since the very first harvest of 1974 and up to today, the harvest is performed by the same ladies along with new entries year by year. This was a deliberate choice. We are all aware of how caring, patient and tender Greek women are in everything that they do. Therefore, they are the only ones that Domaine Hatzimichalis trusts to reap the rewards of his hard work be certain that they will take care of the vineyards with the same motherly care they show to their children. It was in the early 80 s when a batch of 1000 bottles of high quality Cabernet Sauvignon astounded the Greek wine industry. A decade later, the quality of the Domaine Hatzimichalis wines was recognized globally earning a number of international awards. Since then, Domaine Hatzimichalis is continuously improving, respecting Dimitris moto to create better wine in an ecosystem supporting local cultural and social values. Thanasis Papaioannou is one of the first producers who understood and promoted the idea that wine must maintain its unique characteristics. These characteristics come of the grape variety, the vineyards location as well as the procedures, which are followed by the viticulturist - producer for the sake of a biological balance. The family has private owned vineyards in various locations of Nemea and the chosen grape varieties are cultivated with the aim of achieving ultimate harmony with the eco system. Mr. Papaioannou's son, George, a chemist - oenologist, continues the tradition and is as creatively active in his own vineyards as in the modern winery of the Ancient Nemea. The goal of both individuals is the continuous improvement of the wines produced, the maintenance of high standards of hygiene and organic characteristics as well as experimentation on new types of wines. The size of the vineyard - 57 hectars - the various vineyards plots in areas of the zone, which are characterized by differences in the ecosystem and the age of the vines, lead to a multi - dynamic result. The quality of the result is enhanced by the correct selection of a satisfactory number of varieties and the profound knowledge of its pioneers about everything that is related to the vineyard and its cultivation. The official references about the monastery vineyard exist from 1550. The domain and winery were using by monks for viticulture and harvesting of grapes. The monks transported the grape must by mules to monastery's famous cellar where they decant it to 500lt wooden barrels. Local workers were involved in this process helping to monks and glorifying the Great Vineyard "Megali Ambelos" and its wine. At the end of 80th decade the viticulture of grapes was stopped due to gradual leaving of monks from monastery. The Great Vineyard is located on 21st km of Diakofto-Kalavrita Road in place Lovas on plateau above the picturesque Vouraikos canyon at 800 m height. The renovation of the vineyard and planting of new vines took place in 1999 with the long term tenancy of Mega Spileo's abbey. Philosophy From the first moment of its operation, Anastasia s Fragou winery ocuses on the cultivation and promotion of Savatiano, the historical white variety of Mesogaia, that through the beauty of its taste nurtured and raised many generations and of course the owners themselves, Anastasia Fragou and her husband Dionysis Fragou. Nelis Malagouzia Malagouzia Savvatiano Savvatiano History Anastasia Fragou winery was established in 1986 by Constantine Frangos in Mesogaia, the most important region of Attica considering the vine, a region with a manifold winemaking history that is lost in the times of Ancient Greece. Originally, the winery had a more traditional form, with a wine press and concrete tanks, as the wine was designed and destined for being sold as bulk wine to the taverns of Athens and Mesogheia. Gradually, however, following the trend of the time with the "renaissance" of the Greek wine, the winery began to take another direction. In 1999 a huge leap was made, the infrastructure was modernized and the technological equipment was brought up to date. The winery directed its attention towards the production of quality bottled wine. It is the year that the winery passed from father to daughter, Anastasia Fragou. She joins forces with her husband Dionysis Fragou, also a winemaker and viticulturist, and together they begin to work towards a common vision. That means the utilization of the family vineyards, standardization of the wine and the elevation of the Savatiano variety to the protagonist of their land and trademark of their production. Idylle Rose Grenache / Syrah / Agiorgitiko Just outside the village Achinos in Fthiotida, Kyros lay 100 year old vines, biodynamic organic farming, dense planting to produce an unprecedented concentration level in his grapes. For his Rose Wine Idylle d Achinos, three varieties equally intertwined-grenache, Syrah and Agorgitiko are vinified with a very short extraction time creating a wine overwhelmed with finesse. Robola Robola Robola is an increasingly rare, ungrafted, low-yielding variety that thrives on the poor limestone and gravelly soils of the Kefalonian highlands. Grown on the slopes of Mount Ainos in 500m and higher altitudes, it is considered one of the finest Greek white varieties, and has characteristic citrus and mineral aromas, accentuated by the delicate winemaking techniques used.
