I. Introduction At present day, spicy food is becoming more and more popular among people, and a great number of restaurants selling spicy food pop up, likes curry restaurant, spicy hot pot restaurant, Thai food restaurant, and spicy stinky tofu diner. In the winter days, everyone will want to enjoy a spicy hot pot, and we will, too. We especially like to eat spicy food. No matter what we eat, we always add some spices to our dishes. That s why we decided to make a study of it! We want to know more details and history of spice, such as the origin of it, its effect on our body and the variety of spicy delicacies. As a result, in our essay, we will introduce all kinds of delicious spicy dishes to you. And we will give some tips to make you comfortable when you feel too hot. Let s make a through inquiry about the secrets inside the spice s scarlet skin! II. Thesis 1. Brief introduction of chili Chili originated from the southern part of American. In the late fifteenth century, Colombo arrived in American and brought chili back to Europe. So chili was spread all over the world. When chili is unripe, its color is green, and then its skin will become red, yellow, or purple but the most common color is red. Also, it tastes spicy because its skin contains capsaicin. Chili can be used to reinforce the dishes flavor to give us a good appetite. Chili also appeals to many famous historic people; for example, when Peruvian philosopher, Mendes( 門德斯 ), came to visit China in 1960s, he read the Practice Theory and Contradiction Theory which was written by Mao Zedong( 毛澤東 ). Then Mendes went to visit Mao Zedong and they ate dinner together. Eight dishes on the table are Hunan La flavor, Fried Shrimp, Fried Scallop, Chinese Pork Stew, etc. The dish next to the Chinese Pork Stew is Chili Salad. Mao Zedong took some chili to eat and said, The poor and the rich all like to eat chili pepper in Hunan. The dishes would be tasteless if they didn t taste spicy. It can prove that how much Mao Zedong like spicy food. 1

The products made of chili pepper Chili pepper can make many kinds of products, such as: red Chili Powder, chili sauce, Sweet hot sauce, sweet-sour sauce, Broad Bean Paste and so on. When you are cooking, adding these seasonings to the dishes can make it not only savoury but also more delicious. 3. The dishes of chili a. Spicy Hot Pot There are many statements about the origin of spicy hot pot. Among them, it is said that spicy hot pot originated from Sichuan province. Because the miasma there was thick everybody ate chili to improve their blood circulation. At that time, an old man wanted to cook something but he didn t have too much money to buy meat, he put some beef and vegetable which others didn t want to eat into the soup and added many chili and condiment to cover the stench. b. Spicy Stinky Tofu It s said that Zhu Yuanzhang was born into a poor family, and he was a beggar in his youth. Once he was starving so he picked up the tofu that was discarded and overdue, and he fried the tofu to eat. To his surprise, that dish was extremely delicious and it was too delicious to forget. Then he became a General and won many wars, their troop kept fighting against Anhui. He was so happy that he declared all men in the troop eat Spicy Stinky ToFu to celebrate their victory. As a result, Spicy Stinky ToFu became famous. Curry It s made of many seasonings and potatoes. Potatoes taste very soft and melt in your mouth, while curry is very palatable and the sauce is spicy and tasty. Curry is come from India, and its name has the same meaning as sauce in south-india language which means a combination of all kinds of condiments. In addition, people believed that Siddhattha Gotama was the first person to make curry. He used the berries to teach people to make this dish. At first, he wanted to invent the magic medicine that can make people become immortal, and gave the name curry to that dish. Therefore, future generations take that dish as seasoning and spread it. Eating curry has many advantages, such as, waking up appetite, sweating, and purifying body. In addition, some researches have already proved that curry can help recover the scar and prevent Alzheimer's disease! 3
picture.4 curry d. Thai food Thai food often use Taiwanese food s ingredient like shrimp, chicken breast and so on. Most people think that Thai food tastes sour, spicy and heavy. What makes the flavor of Thai food so special? The secret is its condiment, such as, spicy shrimp paste, Sriraja chili sauce, coconut cream, Tamarind, Thai fish sauce and Thai red curry. The common Thai food is moon-shaped shrimp cake, pepper hemp chicken and green curry. picture.5 pepper hemp chicken e. Korean food When it comes to Korean food, everybody will say kimchi and chili. Kimchi is made from chili, Korean fish sauce and cabbage. In fact, the native kimchi tastes salty and there is a tradition that every Korean woman should know how to make kimchi! It is an indispensable dish. Besides, Korean like to eat spicy stir- fried rice cake. Chinese only eat it in Chinese New Year while, there are many stands selling it in Korea street. It is made from Korean spicy sauce and tempura. Don t be scared because of its red appearance. It tastes not as spicy as you think. Research also proved that eating kimchi is good to our health. 4

How to relieve the spicy feeling: Sometimes, we might eat too spicy food and we usually drink a lot of water to relieve that stimulative feeling. However, no matter how many glasses water we drink, it seems useless. To tell the truth, drinking water is not the best way! There are some pieces of advice you can give it a try! Drink milk. Milk contains casein which is helpful to reduce the painful feeling. Besides, cold bean milk vinegar starch and plum flavor drink are some useful material to help you. But which is the best to you? You have to try them by yourself! b. The hottest chili pepper There are about 3000 different kinds of chili pepper, and what is the hottest spice in the world? The advantages of eating chili pepper Chili pepper contains capsaicin which can accelerate the metabolism of fat and prevent adipose deposition so chili peppers are useful to help people lose the weight. What is more, chili pepper is rich in vitamin A and C that is good to keep skin smooth and white, the death cells to fall off, accelerate the new cells to form and prevent melanin from heaping. And there are also many benefits for health. It can help people keep fit, because a kind of ingredient in the chili can burn the fat of human body. Chili can strengthen your stomach, accelerate the digestion and improve your appetite. It can also relieve the pain on the skin. Capsaicin is useful to help relieve the pain on skin caused by many kinds of disease, help improve the ability of heart, accelerate the circulation of blood, lower the blood sugar, and prevent the heart disease and gallstone. Last but not least, chili pepper is full of vitamin C, and it can turn cholesterol into bile acid. To sum up, eating chili pepper has many benefits if you don t too much eat them. b. The disadvantages of eating chili pepper If we eat too much chili, we will hurt our body. In fact, every food cannot be overeaten, or the advantages will all turn to disadvantages. Someone who have a stomach ulcer or stomach problem eating chili will make their stomach irritate. So they shouldn t eat chili. If someone who have constipation, mouth and tongue feels completely dry and have sore throat, eating chili will make these symptoms more serious. In addition, someone who has toothache, cough, acute gastritis, acute bronchitis, high blood pressure should eat chili more cautiously. At last, because spicy hot pot s hot degree is higher and it irritates stomach more easily, we should also be cautious when we eat it. III. Conclusion Because we are fascinated with the chili pepper, we decided to make a study about it. And we get a lot of knowledge from this experience! According to our research, today most of people eat spicy food, whether it is extra spicy, spicy or mild, they take it as an important seasoning. Thus, many dishes would become tasteless if spices are not added. Furthermore, many curative effects astonished us. In Sichuan, people there are famous for eating extremely spicy, but the reason they eat chili may surprise you. Because it is sultry and hot there, to dissipate the heat in the body, they add spices to 6
their daily food. But our results proved that eating too much chili really do harm to our health, so we should control our diet. In this essay, we introduced some spicy food and this made us understand more about chili. Also, we can use information in our daily life. To us, these have become our knowledge. However, the more we know about chili, the more curious we are. Will there appear another super spicy chili? Will chili be a kind of healthy food? Many questions are hidden in the scarlet skin. We hope that chili can create more impossible things and human being gain more benefits some day! IV.
