2627-29 Chartres Street, New Orleans, LA - Page 5 PROPERTY DESCRIPTION ARCHITECTURE - The Queen Anne creole cottage located at 2627-2729 Chartres Street in New Orleans, Louisiana is a contributing historic residence in the historic Faubourg Marigny Historic District, one of New Orleans oldest neighborhoods within the jurisdiction of the Historic District Landmarks Commission (HDLC). It was built as early as 1883; as is documented in one of the area s earliest maps, the Robinson Atlas Map of 1883. This residence is a multi-family double shotgun, one-story, clad in wood drop-siding. It is four bays wide and five bays deep and is raised on stucco-over-brick continuous front wall & brick piers in the rear. It has a strong low-pitched hip roof with terracotta ridge tiles with secure gutters and downspouts, capped with a central brick chimney on the ridge. The front façade is covered by a small overhand of the roof, supported by small wooden corbels in the Queen Anne design - popular in New Orleans architecture from approximately 1880 through 1910. The entrances are graced with a 4-step stucco-over-brick stair, with each door and window protected with operable wooden louvre shutters and ornamented with arced wooden window and door surrounds. The front doors and transoms are decorated with rounded glass, while the windows are wooden six-over-six double hung. RESIDENCE: Upon entering each unit, a double parlor is separated by operable pocket doors 11 tall. The second parlor can be used as a bedroom or additional living space. A separate door enters the second bedroom. A kitchen and bath are situated to the rear. The 2627 side has a built-in utility room with a washer and dryer. Each side has a covered porch almost 13 long. GROUNDS: The size of the lot is 30 feet fronting Chartres Street, stretching back 100 feet, 3,000 square feet, approximately.0688 acres. There are two small trees on the sidewalk in the front. The property is gated to the building line at the sidewalk and raises approximately ten feet from the ground. Secure access to the alleys on both sides of the house are made through an electronic or manual key access. OWNERSHIP: This double shotgun has been owned by the same owner since 1977, over 40 years. These owners have positively maintained this historic residence for those who appreciate historic and original craftsmanship, retaining much of its original architectural elements and suffering little modernization. This home is perfect for a historic preservationist, or historic architecture enthusiast. With many residences being flipped and stripped of its historic authenticity, 2627-2629 Chartres is a rare find.

2627-29 Chartres Street, New Orleans, LA - Page 8 MAPS ROBINSON S ATLAS MAP OF CITY OF NEW ORLEANS 1883 Thirty maps comprise Robinson s Atlas of the City of New Orleans, Louisiana, published by E. Robinson in New York City in 1883. The title page states that it was compiled from surveys by New Orleans city surveyor and architect John F. Braun. Braun most likely created the maps during the latter part of the 1870s. Originally created for the use of insurance companies, Robinson s Atlas is now a rich source of information for wide variety of researchers. Individuals tracing the history of their homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods find a wealth of helpful visual detail in Robinson s Atlas, including important clues to former street addresses. The maps indicate existing lots, buildings, and geographic landmarks. The color pink represents brick buildings, and yellow signifies wooden structures. Printed street names are contemporaneous to publication; hand-written name changes were added at a later undetermined date. Street addresses predate the current system, adopted by New Orleans in the early 1890s.

Since the current building is raised, and wood frame, the former brick-nogged residence was demolished and the new one was constructed shortly after. Sanborn Insurance Map. ON THE 2600 BLOCK OF CHARTRES T: Many of the residences on the 2600 block of Chartres share a similar form, size and proportion to 2627-2629 Chartres one-story Queen Anne double shotguns, raised on stucco-over-brick piers, clad in wood drop siding, operable door and window shutters and building line directly accessed to the sidewalk. As a result of this, the neighborhood community is close, familiar and long-standing. 2627 Chartres on the far right. Neighbors follow similar architecture. Image courtesy of Google Maps, April 2017.
