Matthew Habib Owner of Legit Dogs and Ice 51 South Grove, Elgin, IL 708-738-8306 Habib.Matthew@LegitDogsAndIce.com 01/10/2019 Statement of Purpose: Description Legit Dogs and Ice, located in the basement level of 51 South Grove, Elgin IL, is a restaurant which offers gourmet hot dogs, authentic Hawaiian shave ice and artisan fry creations. This small business is veteran-owned and operated by Matthew Habib and his wife Jennifer Polit and sports a punk-rock venue and skater atmosphere. This family-orientated restaurant is unique as it also offers an array of free arcade games and is host to birthday parties, homecoming parties, table top gaming groups and tournaments, esport groups and tournaments, independent movie premiers, and numerous musical and entertainment events. Legit Dogs and Ice primarily operates as a normal restaurant with the arcade game element, however, typically on weekends, the larger events are hosted. There are three tiers of operation Legit Dogs and Ice experiences, and during all three, the business still serves food to its customers. The three tiers are as follows: Tier 1 Standard: The business operates solely as a restaurant, possibly hosting micro events such as birthday parties or table top gaming groups. All tables and chair remain in place. Tier 2 Small Events: The business operates as a restaurant, but hosts publicly advertised events, sometimes ticketed or asking donation for the event or performers. These types of events would include a small band, local comedian, poetry jam, karaoke, sport or school fundraisers and private events. In some cases, all tables and chair would remain; others no more than 75% of chairs and tables would be moved or rearranged. Some of these events may be ticketed with a cover charge. We estimate 4-6 small events per month.
Tier 3 Headlined Events: The business continues to sell food, but hosts headlined events with major bands, who are typically promoted and ticketed through their respective record labels. Headliners would also include large scale comedy shows and dance events for holidays, such as New Year s Eve. Typically, all chairs and tables are removed for these events. These types of events are typically ticketed and have a cover charge. We estimate 1-2 headlined events per month. By utilizing the basement unit of the building, Legit Dogs and Ice has practically eliminated any sound pollution which may spill out on to the street, and into any neighboring buildings. The owners have remained vigilant in policing their guests, as well as maintaining a positive relation with both business and residential neighbors. In closing, by being allowed to host these special events, Legit Dogs and Ice is able to bring visitors in to Elgin, from outside communities and states. Not only does this a bring positive view to the city, but also supports local businesses and promotes the arts. 2
