Italy LOMBARDIA PAVIA Lombardy (Lombardia) stretches from the border with Switzerland and the Stelvio National Park, down through the stunning lakes of Lago di Como, Lago Iseo, Lago Maggiore and Lago di Garda, and on to the plain of the River Po. It is one of the wealthiest Italian regions known as the center of Italian fashion, commerce, and industry. 6
PAVIA Pavia is a city in northern Italy. Pavia is in the Lombardy Region with 71.486 inhabitants. It is a very old, historical city. Pavia is 35 km south of Milan. The city sits on the banks of the Ticino River. 7
The Covered Bridge or "Ponte Coperto" over the Ticino Pavia on the Ticino River near its confluence with the Po. Known as Ticinum in Roman times, it was an important stronghold of the empire and later served as the capital of the Longobard kings. 8
Pavia is a university city with fine Romanesque and medieval buildings and an interesting historic center. Pavia is known as the city of 100 towers even if only a few remain intact today. 9
The Visconti Castle was built for Gian Galeazzo Visconti; the walls are covered with a characteristic red brickwork. It has two embattled towers and a huge court yard closed with arcades. The great Italian poet Francesco Petrarca worked here; he was called by Gian Galeazzo Visconti to take care of his library. 10
Pavia University The town symbol is the University,is one of the oldest in Italy. Pavia University is mainly articulated in courts flanked by colonnades. Even today, it still has the yellow color of the public Austrian offices. The University hired famouse eloquence professors like Vincenzo Monti and Ugo Foscolo. 11
On the background the majestic octagonal dome of Pavia Cathedral. The Cathedral houses Christ s Crown Thorns. The Broletto Palace, which was in the middle age the symbol of the municipal independence, is the oldest in all Lombardy. 12
Pavia food specialties are zuppa pavese and risotto alla certosina, created by the monks of the Certosa di Pavia. 13
Pavia: the capital of rice. Today Pavia is considered the "rice capital", thanks to its 78.000 hectares of paddy fields; it is the largest rice-growing area in Italy. 14
Lombardy cuisine includes dishes such as risotto alla milanese, frogs (only in Pavia), ossobuco alla milanese, polenta and the now nationally acclaimed Christamas cake Il Panettone. 15
The best wines come from the Oltrepò Pavese area. This region provides Pavia and Milan with most of their red and white table wine. 16

Students at L. Cossa course for social workers study to become nursery school teachers, to help the handicapped, the disabled and the elderly. Students at our school can attend a 3 year course and obtain a first level diploma as well as attend 2 additional years to obtain a higher level diploma. 19
