THE 2016 TIME CAPSULE On Monday, September 19, CIS buried its second time capsule. With the 10 Year Celebration that Camana Bay celebrated earlier this month, CIS dug up a time capsule that was buried 10 years ago. The new time capsule includes a few things that were in the old time capsule but mostly features things from the present such as pictures of the current staff and students, copies of students work, electronics, a 3D print of the school s front entrance sign, a ceramic from the 2016 Empty Bowls Fundraiser, that day s newspaper, a copy of The Weekly Current, examples of Tweets made with the CIS Hashtag #CISInspires, and much more. The time capsule was buried between the A and B block and will be there to be opened in another 10 years. Be sure to ask about it in 2026! Funds raised will go to The Cancer Society. CIS Traffic Safety Reminder CIS ensures that safety measures are in place to help protect our students. These measures include security guards, speed bumps, speed limits, and designated parking, drop-off and pick-up areas. We ask that all persons entering the school compound pay special attention to the above mentioned measures and assist us in keeping our students safe. Please observe the speed limits, and watch out for children in the drop-off and pick-up areas as you enter or leave them. We thank you doing your part to keep our school safe! Click the calendar below to view the CIS Calendar for more upcoming events. CIVVIES Day is next Friday, September 30. Students may wear any color civvies. Birthday Books Birthday books are back! If you would like to donate a birthday book for your child, please fill out the Google form below. You may also donate your child s favorite book. We would be happy to add a name plate to the front of the book with the details of the donation. https://goo.gl/forms/19elirmddxtzxkun2 CIS Community News Page 2 Innisbrook Information CIS will not be conducting an Innisbrook giftwrapping fundraiser as Innisbrook no longer offers a school fundraising program. Thank you for your support in the past. CIS Hockey Champions! Congratulations to the CIS students who participated in the EY Hockey Tournament Last weekend. The CIS Under 9 team and the Under 14 team both won the championship in their division. Travelling Lemonade Stand On Thursday, September 22, Aleena, Kaija, and Tessa set up a lemonade and treats stand in the staff lounge to help raise funds for the Heroes for Hannah event taking place on Friday, Sept 23 at The Wicket, Cricket Square. With the donations made by the faculty they raised over $400. CIS is very proud of these girls! CIS Secondary Boys Football The CIS boys football team opened up their season on Thursday against perennial rival Cayman Prep. Prep has a very skilled squad this year, and the Blue Iguanas found themselves down 2-0 in the first 10 minutes. The boys were not discouraged by the initial setback, however, and fought their way back into the match. CIS worked hard to apply more pressure to the Prep players, and attempted to counterattack quickly. The redoubled effort kept Prep scoreless for the next 40 minutes and led to a few scoring opportunities for CIS. The final score was 3-0 after Prep got another goal in the last few minutes. The boys showed great heart despite the loss, and are looking forward to getting back on the pitch for their next game against St. Ignatius in two weeks time. CAISSA Volleyball Fundraiser Thank you! A very special thank you to all of the CIS parents who supported the CAISSA Volleyball Tournament by paying for the baby-sitting service last Friday. Your contribution has helped to lower the total cost for the athletes. There will be more fundraisers coming up as the school year continues. CIS s Athletics Department greatly appreciates your support.

School Progress Reports Elementary School Progress Reports Community News Cont d Page 3 Assessment plays an integral role in a meaningful teaching and learning process. The overall goal of assessment is to ensure the success and continual growth of our students. Assessment practices are varied, align with the curriculum and are student centered. Because communicating student progress throughout the year is important, progress reports will be provided to any student who is receiving a C or below. These reports will be sent to you via email through the office next week. If you have questions regarding a progress report, please respond directly to your child s teacher. Secondary Progress Grades Online Portals Updated We are now a month into the school year and all secondary teachers are updating Portals for the latest grades as of September 26, 2016. Additionally, if any student is receiving a C or below, teachers will be directly emailing parents with information about progress and providing suggestions for how students can work to improve in the class. These emails will arrive to you by Monday, September 26 at the latest. If you have questions on these progress emails, please respond to teachers directly. If you do not receive any emails, your child(ren) have all grades above C. You can log into Portals to see all of their grades and assignments. We are here to ensure every success for CIS students. Thank you! New Swim Instructor Kristy B. We are very excited to welcome Kristy B to the CIS family as our new swimming teacher. Kristy has extensive experience as a swimming instructor, participating in competitions, and working with children. She is a Darkness to Light Facilitator and she currently works for the Cayman Islands Red Cross as a Senior FA/CPR/AED Instructor. We anticipate that Kristy will be here at CIS conducting swimming lessons on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week, and then she will be here full time the following week. Please welcome Kristy to CIS. Early Childhood Coordinators Early Childhood and Elementary News Introducing the new Early Childhood Co-Coordinators! Early Childhood and Elementary Headlines Cont d Parent Volunteer Program Training Page 4 We had a great turn out last night for the Parent Volunteer Training! Understanding that some parents were not able to attend this training, we are pleased to offer an additional training for parents. This two hour training will be held in the MPR on Wednesday, September 28 from 9:00 11:00 a.m. For those unfamiliar with the program, it gives parents the ability to assist school faculty and staff during the school day in a few key areas: In Classroom Support Playground/Lunchroom Art Room You could be reading a book with a child, helping practice math facts, prepping art materials, or providing another set of hands (and eyes!) at lunch and recess time. Parents build partnerships with teachers and staff, helping students get the most out of their day at school. Schedules are set monthly based on matching teacher needs and parent availability. Most volunteers commit 1-2 hours per week, but we welcome volunteers who may want to volunteer more or less depending on their availability. In order to participate in the program, there are three requirements: 1) participate in a program training session that includes a Positive Discipline tutorial, 2) read and agree to program policies and procedures, and 3) receive an up to date police clearance certificate (with costs reimbursed by CIS.) Last year's volunteers as well as new volunteers will need to complete all requirements for 2016-17. Our PVP training is set for next week Wednesday, September 28 from 9:00 11:00 a.m. in the MPR. Please RSVP to Ms. Melissa at Melissa.Kay@cayintschool.ky. We look forward to seeing you there! Kind regards, Melissa Kay Early Childhood/Elementary School Principal Feeling faces Ms. Tatum s grade 1 class has been working on a Feeling Faces Chart for Positive Discipline.
