2013 FLEURIEU PENINSULA FOOD FIESTA! 10 th ANNUAL OLIVE AWARDS Aims and Objectives To bring the region s olive industry partners together under the banner of food. To recognise and celebrate difference and diversity within the region. To investigate the relationship between oil quality and the terroir of our region. To foster understanding and an exchange of knowledge in order to improve the quality of our oils and table olives. To provide a promotional vehicle for table olives and olive oil from the region. To provide a promotional tool for Fleurieu Peninsula Food. To provide a valuable guide for consumers of our regional oils and olives. To investigate regional varietal flavour profiles. Fleurieu Peninsula Food would like to thank our supporters and sponsors for their generosity: Zannie Flanagan for developing the Fiesta! Olive Awards and generously agreeing to come back as Chief Judge from 2010 through to 2013 as well as being an ongoing ambassador of Fleurieu Olive Oils. This is the 10 th year of the awards and Zannie will retire as Chief Judge. Her contribution to the awards and the industry is outstanding and greatly appreciated. Our other judges were Nigel Rich, Briony Leibich, Paul Petanga and junior judge Esther Alexander. Major Sponsor Fleurieu Living Magazine for promoting and supporting the event. Nigel Rich for generously providing a venue for judging and the Awards night. Fiesta! Olive Awards volunteers, especially Fleurieu Peninsula Food Board Members Rachel McMillan and Bronwyn Busbridge for their enthusiasm and time. Willunga Farmers Market and Victor Harbor Farmers Market for hosting Punters Pick. Rio Coffee, Jetty Food Store, Spice Girlz and the Victor Harbor Farmers Market for sponsoring the prizes for the overall winners. Briony Leibich who guided the Punters at Willunga & Victor Harbor. All of the entrants supporting this event, thank you for the pursuit of excellence. 2

Chief Judge s Comments Thank you to the Fleurieu Food Committee for the opportunity to assist with the Fiesta! Olive Awards judging again this year. This year is my last year as chief judge of the event, but I am very pleased to announce that a younger and very enthusiastic team will be managing the event into the future. Rachel McMillan, Chairperson of Fleurieu Food, who does such a great job acting as steward for the Awards, will continue in that role and assistant judge Briony Liebich will step into the role of chief judge next year. Briony has a degree in sensory science and is well qualified for the role. She currently spends her days managing beer quality for Lion Nathan. Thank you to all the competitors who again took the time this year to send in their entries. Entries are well up on last year and the judges found the best oils to be of very good quality. However, the judges found a number of oils showed faults and were subsequently disqualified. While this will no doubt be devastating for the producers concerned, (the oils will not be publically identified), we would encourage the producers to investigate where production improvements can be made so that in years to come, you too can make it into the medal class. It is nearly 30 years since I first discovered olive oil was being produced here in our region and it has been exciting and inspiring to be part of the tremendous development that has taken place in the industry since then. So my thanks and congratulations to all entrants this year whether you won a medal or not because it is your commitment to the awards and to improving olive oil and olive quality within the industry generally, that will continue to drive our growing reputation as one of Australia s premium food producing regions! I applaud Rachel and her committee for the work they do on our behalf and for their determination to continue the Awards. My sincere thanks to my associate judges and to Nigel Rich for his fine Fleurieu hospitality during and after the judging and for hosting the Awards celebration. Zannie Flanagan Chief Judge 3

Punters Pick After the official judging, the five top scoring olive oils from the show were offered for tasting and selection for the Punters Pick Award at the Willunga Farmers Market and Victor Harbor Farmers Market. Punters were asked to record their scores on a simple entry form and rate the oils in order of preference. Punters were guided at the markets by experienced olive oil tasters or industry professionals. The top five oils presented to the public this year were Nangkita Olives Koroneiki, Nangkita Olives Leccino, Diana Extra Virgin, Diana Novello, and Hugo. The scores were very close this year at the Victor Harbor Farmers Market, only a few points separating the winners with Nangkita Olives Koroneiki coming out on top. At the Willunga Farmers Market the Nangkita Olives Leccino was the outstanding winner. The Punters Pick was a very successful event, professionally run and of considerable value to the local industry in terms of valuable consumer feedback. Our thanks go to both Victor Harbor and Willunga Farmers Markets for the exceptional venues and assistance with this event. Rachel McMillan Coordinator Punters Pick 7
