As part of e upcoming celebrations of Louisiana s 200 Anniversary of Statehood, an exhibit highlighting e unique Acadian history is on display at Palmetto Island State Park s visitor center. Louisiana Statehood Bicentennial Revisiting Acadia: Acadian to Cajun includes photographs, memorabilia, Acadian flags and brochures, among oer items. The exhibit is on loan from e Acadian Museum of Era, and will become part of e park s interpretive program at focuses on bo e natural and cultural heritage of e area. Anyone interested in learning to speak French in a social setting is invited to Le Pique-Nique which is held monly on e second Sunday in Lafayette s Girard Park. Look for e Acadian flag. The Council for e Development of French in Louisiana, in close partnership wi e Louisiana Department of Education, e Louisiana Consortium of Immersion Schools, e Bureau Wallonie-Bruxelles (Belgium) and e Consulate General of France in New Orleans, is welcoming 50 foreign associate teachers of French to Louisiana for a four-day orientation and workshop beginning Aug. 1. On July 6, I attended a luncheon - for e New Orleans Consular corps- and dinner New Orleans hosted by honorary Consul General Pat Denechaud in honor of e Consul General of Canada Paula Caldwell - St. Onge. The new Consul General of France Jean - Claude Brunet arrived in NO and attended e dinner. His wife and 3 children will be joining him shortly. He is very personable and anxious to continue working wi CODOFIL and all related groups. In her speech, Caldwell-St. Onge said her office will work to support e GRA. In October she will come back to New Orleans for e opening ceremonies and return for e closing in Lafayette during Festivals Acadiens et Creole. She told me at she was going to focus and work hard at promoting cultural and economic interchanges between Louisiana and Canada. Bernie will be attending e Acadian/Mi kmaq festival in Petite Reviere where also Christine Guidry Lejeune Law and daughter Lee Ann will join him to play Cajun Music. He will also present e La. State Flag at en Rep. Johnaan Perry donated (had been flown over e
State Capitol) This is to reciprocate to Bernie for being given e Mi kmaq Council flag and appointed Keeper of e Flag in La. The festival is Aug. 19 and 20. Mark Sindler has released a very brief description of his proposed book Cajun Routes/Cajun Connections: A journey Through e Acadian Maritimes (working title): This photography book, wi bilingual (French/English) captions and interstitial narrative text, would explore e Acadian regions of e Canadian Maritime Provinces ancestral home of Louisiana s Cajun population. It would include sites selected in collaboration wi Canadian historians, cultural geographers, archaeologists, and oer local experts, covering areas of pre-expulsion development habitation, as well as ose settled e returning deportees. The Collection of 150-200 images would cover bo e natural and built landscape and also e retention of tradional culture, as reflected in contemporary life and events such as e Festival Acadien in Caraquet. History: In 1884 Fr. Richard Marcel Richard asked a seamstress Mrs. Babineau to sew e first Acadian flag, which is on display at e museum at e Universite de Moncton. Recently, Fr. Richard of St. Martinville spoke proudly of his Acadian heritage in his home during e French mass in St. Martinville for e Commemoration of e Deportation. It was a very nice event. The choir s french hymns were wonderful. The candles during e procession to e memorial cross was a nice added touch. It was covered by TV3 and Daily Iberian - e reporter interviewed Boris Nigoux my summer French intern for anoer story. Fox News came to my office in e afternoon and did an interview. Following e events, we had a nice meal at Café St. Johns. The Louisiana Bicentennial Commission held its regular meeting at 1:30 pm Thursday. Aug 4, 2011 at e State Library of Louisiana - 701 N. 4 St., Baton Rouge, LA. On e evening of Nov. 19, e French American Chamber of Commerce will host its major fund raising event for e year: e Beaujolais Festival at e J.W. Marriott on Canal Street. The FACC has secured a special room rate for at Sat. Night and, for ose of you wishing to stay overnight, I will ask at CODOFIL board members be included. The concept behind e CAJUN MAFIA website was to keep e younger generations interested in eir ancestry by giving it a cool name. The name was trademarked in 2002 and e website was created in 2009. A concern for choosing e name MAFIA received
raves from most, however, ere were a few discerning eyebrows. Therefore, in order for e concept to be politically correct where everyone could be on board (including politicians), MAFIA was made into an acronym; Moers and Faers Instilling Ancestry.
