Fruit Juice Australia The Australian domestic juice market in perspective

Who we are The Australian Beverage Council (ABCL) is the peak body representing the non-alcoholic beverage industry. Our membership is comprised of small, medium-sized and large companies. Collectively these companies produce over 95% of the industry s volume. Our Members annually contribute over $7 billion to the Australian economy per and nationally we employ almost 50k people. The Australian Beverages Council introduced a dedicated juice division, Fruit Juice Australia (FJA), in 2009 and a dedicated water division, the Australasian Bottled Water Institute (ABWI), in 2011. Through these divisions, our organisation, its relevance and economic contribution continue to grow.

What we do The ABCL was created to act as a powerful voice on behalf of the non-alcoholic beverages industry and its suppliers. Some of the issues we advocate: advertising regulations dietary choice environment management waste container deposit schemes health and nutrition information water resources ingredients taxation

What we do When requiring specific knowledge on a topic, our Members can access a number of resources from us including: Data and industry reports Research Government Relations Crisis management Media monitoring Manuals and publications Presentations

Current industry issues: CDS The ABCL has been consulting with State and Territory Govt s on the introduction of Container Deposit Legislation for more than 2 years. Following months of work and many air miles between Sydney and Brisbane, the Queensland Government recently responded to the feedback provided by industry through the ABCL. The launch of the State s Container Refund Scheme will now take place on 1 November 2018. The Tasmanian Govt may introduce its scheme as early as mid-2019 and WA is set to introduce its scheme on 1 January 2020.

Current industry issues: Sugar A number of countries and jurisdictions have introduced or are considering introducing sugar taxes. There is little credible evidence to suggest a sugar tax will have any impact on reducing sugar in a category already declining. In Australia, neither side of government supports a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages at present. A number of public health advocates have indicated their strong preference for a sugar levy. The ABCL has been advocating for a collaborative response to obesity and chronic disease in Australia, as has occurred with matters such as the the Health Star Rating scheme. A sugar tax would affect fruit juice drinks and juice with added sugar.

Market matters Consumption of packaged fruit juice in Australia has been in freefall in recent years, with findings from Roy Morgan Research showing that the number of Aussies who drink it in an average week has fallen by 1.3 million people between 2012 and 2016. In June 2012, 6.6 million Australians aged 14 or older (35.2% of the population) reported drinking packaged fruit juice in any given seven days, consuming an average of 4.6 glasses each. Fast forward to June 2016, and that figure had fallen to 5.3 million people (26.9%) drinking an average 4.3 glasses each: fewer people drinking fewer glasses.

Market matters: fruit juice manufacturing Industry firms produce and bottle fruit and fruit juice drinks, but do not manufacture 100% pure, concentrated or single strength fruit juice. Key statistics: Revenue: $869m Profit: $71.3 Businesses: 108 Employment: 1,174 Annualised growth 2018-23: 1.1% Annualised growth 2018-23: 0.8%

Consumer insights Revenue in the Juice segment amounts to US$800m in 2018. The market is expected to grow annually by -0.2% (CAGR 2018-2021). The market's largest segment is "Orange Juice" with a market volume of US$562m in 2018. In relation to total population figures, per person revenues of US$32.35 are generated in 2018. The average per capita consumption stands at 15.2L in 2018.
