Remembering the past... Joe Atria came to America with a dream to run his own business and provide for his family. The dream began to take shape when he bought a piece of property in Mt. Lebanon and started his own grocery store on the site of the present Atria s. In the 1930 s, Joe expanded the business to include a barber shop and dry cleaning store, becoming an integral part of the Mt Lebanon Community. In 1933, with the ending of prohibition, Joe saw a golden opportunity and transformed the neighborhood store into a beer garden that sold six packs to go. When a liquor license became available, the store changed once again, only this time into a full scale neighborhood bar serving food. Since the late 30 s, Atria s was the local watering hole for people from all walks of life. A place you could count on to unwind after a hard day s work. No matter if you were a doctor, an executive or a steelworker, you were at home among friends when you walked through the door. Atria s became a Mt Lebanon Landmark.
Anticipating the future... Joe Atria left his legacy in the hands of his family, knowing that they would carry on the Atria tradition. This they did until early 1998. At that time it was sold to Pat McDonnell and Frank Puskarich, two Pittsburghers and local restauranteurs. Along with their partners, they were moved by the tradition that was Atria s and have formulated their own dream - to mix the best of the old with the best of the new and start a new Atria tradition for the 21st Century. To being the process, they completley renovated the building itself. The basement was transformed from a 1930 s cellar to a bright, modern kitchen. On the first floor, careful attention was given to restoring the antique terrazzo floors complmentaing them with a new maohgany bar, typifying the ambiance of the 1930 s. Many banners and photographs which once graced the walls have been restored and placed throughout the first floor. The partners made a special effort to honor the Atria family by turning what was once the Barber Shop into the Atria Dining Room. The second floor family apartment has been transformed into four comfortable dining rooms. To give Atria s even more presence in the community and allow patrons the option of dining outside in the Pittsburgh summertime, a front garden patio and upper deck were created. As we introduce Atria s to other neighborhoods around town, the tradition of the Mt. Lebanon landmark that ha been Atria s for over half a century continues... Atria s - building a Pittsburgh tradition one neighborhood at a time.
