Natick Cart is open from 7am to 930am Our cart is located right outside of the cafeteria, in the path of students when they enter the building in the morning, when they switch classes and when they enter or exit the cafeteria. NHS has no substitute teachers, all students in classes without teachers gather in the cafeteria, so there is constant travel by the cart. 3

Natick Reimbursable Breakfasts A la cart sales Everything is grab and go: hot entrees, cold entrees, granola bars etc. Students and adults are attracted to the retail look along with the convenience 4

Needham Meals that are tasty and easy to access Everything is grab and go: hot entrees, cold entrees, granola bars etc. Students and adults are attracted to the retail look along with the convenience 7

Needham Slow growth to maintain integrity Breakfast Cart has been liberating, allowing us to serve by the front door Started slowly and made steps to get where we wanted to go. 8

Needham Administrative support has been key to success Delicious menu options, including hot chocolate in winter Hot Chocolate event with The New England Dairy Council 9

Mashpee Breakfast Components Assembled into clear bags 10

Mashpee Point of Service made easy Feeding the future 12

West Bridgewater Howard Elementary Grades 4-6, 271 Average daily attendance 24% free and reduced March 2018 - average 99 reimbursable breakfasts/day 35% participation for breakfast May 2018 - Breakfast count of 140 on 5/3 a new high! 13

West Bridgewater We have a breakfast program? Called snack or break Didn t even know WBPS served breakfast when I started and I had three children in the district! Underutilized but it had potential Letter explaining breakfast program sent in September plus info on back of monthly menu helped What worked?? 14

West Bridgewater Timing is EVERYTHING Morning bell is 8:00 am Café is open before where students gather in café but almost ZERO interest 2 nd chance - Students break right after specialist (music, art, band, computers) at: o9:10 am, 9:50 am and 9:58 am Snack is open ended (within reason) 15

West Bridgewater Location, Location, Location! Café is positioned right outside Specialist classrooms Every student passes by cafeteria at break everyday 16

West Bridgewater Grab and Go to the Classroom Speed is key- high volume for 1 cashier Breakfast boats containing a variety of reimbursable breakfast combinations are set out Student have large selection of choices everyday Students are allowed to mix and match Snack racks by cashier allow for customization and a la carte sales Students take food to classroom!! 17

West Bridgewater Simple Variety 18

West Bridgewater Grab and Go to the Classroom 19

West Bridgewater Chilling in the Classroom Teachers designate either a working break or free reading time Students can eat at their desk or in quiet groups around classroom Relaxing Students look forward to it, so do I, it s a long time between the start of school and lunch and they need sustenance. o Ms. Amy Winter, 4 th grade teacher 20

West Bridgewater Show me the money! Parents are encouraged to make online prepayments. No cash in line, student hand in money in homeroom Charge policy allows for borrowing for reimbursable meals (no limit) Absolutely no borrowing for a la carte Guarantees that no student goes hungry Easier to collect money from parents when they know student received a breakfast 21

West Bridgewater We are all on the same team! Great support from Principal, Teachers and Custodian Staff assigned to monitor students in snack line eliminated behavior issues Awesome School Nutrition Staff are flexible with snack schedule to accommodate MCAS, field trips 22

West Bridgewater The morning breakfast program at the Howard School has helped many of our students, who wouldn't ordinarily have breakfast. With the flexibility of the teachers and food service staff, we have organized a schedule which allows all children the opportunity to purchase breakfast and enjoy it in their classrooms. Some students bring a snack from home and they all eat together. Teachers have adjusted their schedules to have this time be a "working snack", or perhaps a read aloud time, but we are confident that all students have access to a balanced breakfast and many are taking advantage of that. o Peggy Spencer, MEd, CAGS, School Principal, Spring Street and Howard School 23

Greenfield Financial benefits we found to Breakfast in the Classroom: 1. Engage with a population of students who may currently not have any exposure to the School Nutrition Programs. 2. Dramatically increase student participation in breakfast and therefore see an increase in federal reimbursement. 24

Greenfield Federal & Newton Elementary Schools were CEP and served breakfast in a traditional model. High Lunch Participation Low Breakfast Participation 25

Greenfield Percent of ADP <20% >90% Traditional vs. BIC Breakfast 26

Greenfield Reimbursement with the traditional service model Federal with BIC, up 40% Newton with BIC, up 52% 27

Greenfield You may be thinking: But that s just because you qualify for CEP! I could never see that kind of increase in my district. BIC with 80% $280,000 + Participation = $500,000 28
