This month s food focus is s! Did You Know? s are the seeds of plants that are grown to be made into food, like wheat, corn, barley, rice, and rye. All grains actually start as whole grains, but as they are refined, or processed into food, the healthy parts of the grain are sometimes removed giving us refined grains (think white flour). Whole grains aren t refined, and still have all the healthy parts and still taste great. You can find whole grain versions of pretty much any food even whole grain pizza crust. Most adults need about 6 to 8 ounces of grain a day, while kids need about 5 or 6, depending on age and activity level. Keep in mind that 1 ounce of grain is equal to 1 2 cup of cooked rice, pasta, or hot cereal, 1 slice of bread, or 1 cup of cereal. Typical portion sizes may be triple that, so keep an eye on your plate and keep it balanced with fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, and don t let grains take over. Try to make half your grains whole by choosing whole grain foods more often for meals and snacks so you can benefit from important antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, and energy. No advance registration necessary! All students are welcome every day! Chartwells new Food and Nutrition Guidelines make it easier than ever for students to make healthy food and beverage choices at school. Our guidelines: Provide more deeply colored, nutrient dense, and fiber rich fruits and vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, spinach, peaches, broccoli, and beans Provide more whole grain foods, such as brown rice and whole wheat Encourage lean proteins including vegetarian and plant basedreduce unhealthy fats, sodium, and sugar Continue Chartwells dedication to earth and community friendly practices by serving hormone free milk, poultry products without the routine use of antibiotics, sustainable seafood, cage free shell eggs, and locally grown produce To learn more about Chartwells go to www.eatlearnlive.com
