The Pilgrims immigrated to America because they wanted to have their own church and practice their religion freelysomething they were unable to do in England. They landed in America in Novemberthe beginning of winter. The story goes that their first winter in America was very difficult as it was very cold and they did not have much food. Many Pilgrims got sick and died. It was a terrible time for them. When spring finally came, it was time for the Pilgrims to plant their crops. They had met some friendly Native Americans, also known as Indians, who showed them how to plant their crops. They grew corn, peas, and wheat, among other crops. These did quite well, and when it was time to harvest them, the Pilgrims discovered they had a bountiful harvest. They decided to have a feast and invite their Native American friends. They were thankful to God because they had survived the winter and had a good harvest. In the United States, this is known as the first Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a popular holiday that has been celebrated in the United States for a very long time. In 1941, the federal government set aside the fourth Thursday in November as a national holiday called Thanksgiving. What do Americans do on this holiday? Simply put, Americans eat lots of food on this holiday. You might think that they eat hamburgers or steak on this day, but the image that most Americans have of the main dish for Thanksgiving is turkey. Other traditional foods eaten on this holiday are corn, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and stuffing. Stuffing, also known as dressing, is made with bread, spices, and some of the juices from the turkey. It is known as stuffing because some people choose to put, or stuff, the bread and spices inside of the turkey. The stuffing will then cook along with the turkey. The most popular dessert on Thanksgiving Day is pumpkin pie. Other types of pies, such as apple pie, banana cream pie, and pecan pie, are also popular. Another tradition on this day is the holding of Thanksgiving Day parades. These parades feature various floats, marching bands, and large balloons in the shape of famous 140
characters such as Mickey Mouse, Superman, and even Sonic the Hedgehog. The most famous parade is the Macy s Thanksgiving Parade in New York City. Macy s is a popular department store and sponsors this parade every year. The parade can be seen all over the country on television. Another popular tradition on this day is to watch sports. Every year on Thanksgiving Day, the Detroit Lions, a professional American football team, have a game against another team. The Lions have played a game on this day every year since 1934, with the exception of 1939--1944, due in part to World War II. Recently, other popular sports, such as pro ice hockey, auto racing, college basketball, and pro basketball, have been holding games on this day. It is not uncommon for people to play American football or basketball with family and friends before or after their Thanksgiving meal. The Friday following Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday. This is the traditional start of the Christmas shopping season. Many stores will open at four in the morning, or even earlier, with special deals and sales.
