History The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1093 by the Count Palatine Heinrich in connection with the foundation of the Maria Laach Abbey. It was destroyed by fire by French troops in 1689 and rebuilt in 1709 / 1710. Ferdinand von Bourscheid surrounded the rocky hill with retaining walls at the beginning of the 19th century making the creation of the magnificent parks and gardens possible. Subsequently the castle changed hands several times and served as, among other things, a monastery for an order of men well into the 1960s. The Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein bought the property in 1985 and began the restoration of the castle and gardens according to old plans. He lived and worked here with his family and sold Schloss Burgbrohl to a businessman from Vienna in 2006. The businessman Andreas Weber acquired the property in 2009. The castle terrace was completely redesigned and planned in 2010. It is so popular with the guests that it is continuously being developed and extended. Furthermore it has become something of an institution for young and old with a varied menu and rustic, cosy atmosphere where families, hikers and cyclists like to meet. In 2018 the HEUFT family of entrepreneurs with Alexandra Heuft and Bastian Gilke acquired the Schlosshotel in order to strengthen the regional location and combine tradition with modernity as well as regionality with globality.
