USS Wexford County LST-1168 2016 Reunion Information & Registration The 2016 USS Wexford County LST-1168 reunion will be held October 27 (Thursday) 30 (Sunday) at the Crowne Plaza Airport North Charleston located at 4831 Tanger Outlet Blvd, North Charleston, SC 29418. The Crowne Plaza is a first class hotel; it is North Charleston's only 4-Diamond Hotel. You will experience genuine southern hospitality in a chic environment with services to pamper your stay. The Crowne Plaza is conveniently located near Charleston s International Airport (CHS). Complimentary shuttle to and from the airport is provided by the Crowne Plaza. For transportation, use the convenient shuttle phone near the baggage claim area or call the hotel direct at 843-744-4472. and across from the Convention Center and Performing Arts Center. The Crowne Plaza hotel is convenient to I-26 and I-526, making it easy to reach. You will love the ambiance of the upscale, modern lobby bar and lounge, offering comfortable conversation areas and a 52" HDTV. USS Wexford County LST-1168 Itinerary Thursday October 27: 12:00 noon: Registration Begins and the Hospitality Room will open. 5:00 PM: Welcome reception. This is the first planned activity of the reunion; join everyone for a few welcome and introductory remarks followed by a cash bar and hors d oeuvres (not your dinner; kindly remember there are others in line behind you). Cost of the reception is included in Option A. If you cannot participate you may opt-out; see the Registration Form, Adjustment Opportunities Block and deduct Thursday s reception. Friday October 28: 6:30 8:30: Breakfast will be in the hotel restaurant with coupons provided. Eat at your leisure during the restaurant s normal operating hours, keeping in mind when the tour departs (if you are going). Cost of breakfast is included in the room rate so you may not opt out of breakfast. 8:45 AM: Load up and 9:00 AM depart hotel for the Confederate Submarine H. L. Hunley and a carriage tour of Charleston. On February 17, 1864 the Confederate Submarine H. L. Hunley successfully sank the Union warship Housatonic in Charleston Harbor by ramming it. After this successful foray she also sank with all of her crew where she remained until August 8, 2000. On this day, after months of planning, she was successfully raised and taken to a special tank at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston. Today you will have the opportunity to view this 19 th century marvel as archeologists continue their research. A replica of Hunley has been built so you can enter it and see what life on that tiny sub must have been like. The museum also contains artifacts taken from the ship when it was raised. Following the Hunley visit you re off for a carriage ride of historic Charleston just the way your ancestors did by horse drawn carriage. The leisurely ride through the narrow streets and alleyways takes you past carefully restored 18 th and 19 th century homes and buildings. Your guide will relate 300 years of history in a few short minutes. He will probably remind you that 2016 is the fourth straight year that Charleston was named the number one tourist destination in the USA and Travel and Leisure Magazine named Charleston the number one tourist destination in the WORLD for 2016 (and you thought Charleston was a sleepy little southern town; but at least now you know why it is somewhat expensive.) After the carriage ride you ll have time for lunch on your own in the Old City Market. You ll depart for the ride back to the hotel around 2:30 PM. There is a minimum of 35 persons per bus, for this tour to go at the quoted price. If less than 35 sign up the tour will be cancelled or the price adjusted to cover the difference. Cost of this trip is not included in either of the Options. If you wish to go, you must register separately; see the Registration Form, Adjustment Opportunities Block Add Friday s Tour. 10:00 AM: Registration will resume and Hospitality room will open for Friday arrivals and anyone not going on the tour. Fresh coffee will be available. 6:00 PM: Social Hour with a cash bar. Everyone gather here for your favorite beverage while you anticipate a good dinner. 7:00 PM: Dinner is served. Tonight the dual entree buffet will feature some traditional southern food, Brunswick stew, roasted catfish and grilled pork chops smothered in sawmill gravy with potatoes, a vegetable, dessert and cornbread. After dinner we ll see if the Entertainment Czar has anything in store for you. Cost of the buffet is included in Options A and B. Saturday October 29: 6:30 8:30: Breakfast will be in the hotel restaurant with coupons provided. Eat at your leisure during the restaurant s normal operating hours, keeping in mind when the tour departs (if you are going). Cost of breakfast is included in the room rate so you may not opt out of breakfast. 8:45 AM: Load up and 9:00 AM move out for Patriots Point, the world s largest naval maritime museum. Visit the aircraft carrier YORKTOWN, the famous fighting lady of WW II, the submarine CLAMAGORE, one of the last diesel powered submarines, and the destroyer LAFFEY. In addition, there is an exact replica of an advance naval base from the Vietnam era. You ll take your own self-guided tour of either/all of the ships, but at 11:50 AM, meet under the American Flag on the Yorktown hangar deck. From there you ll go as a group to the CPO mess for a traditional hot lunch. Then you ll depart Patriots Point for Boone Hall Plantation (not to be confused with Boone Farms bottom shelf fine Wild Cherry or Strawberry Wine). Boone Hall was used in the filming of the TV series North and South and the movie Queen ; also the background filming for the famous Gone With the Wind was done there. Tour the plantation house, the slave quarters built from brick made on the plantation in the 1800 s and watch the flower ladies make their sweet grass baskets. You ll depart for the hotel around 3:00 PM. There is a minimum of 35 persons per bus, for this tour to go at the quoted price. If less than 35 sign up the tour will be cancelled or the price adjusted to cover the difference. Cost of this trip is not included in either of the Options. If you wish to go, you must register separately; see the Registration Form, Adjustment Opportunities Block Add Saturday s Tour. 4:00 5:00 PM: Business meeting in hospitality room. 6:00 PM: Social Hour and Photo Session begins. Individual and/or couples photos will be taken for inclusion in the 2016 Reunion Memory Book. As soon as possible after the reunion, the memory book will be sent to everyone who registers for Option A or B; or anyone selecting the Individualized Option and places an order for the memory book. Be sure to have your photo taken for inclusion!! 7:00 PM: The USS Wexford County Banquet. Enjoy tonight in a business casual setting, coat and tie optional for the gentlemen and corresponding dress for the ladies. If you can still wear a complete and correct uniform, please do so. There will be open seating, sit where you like, with whom you like. The memorial service will be part of the banquet program. Cost of the banquet is included in the price of all three options. If you cannot participate in the banquet you may opt-out. See the Registration Form, Adjustment Opportunities Block Deduct Saturday s Banquet. Sunday October 30: 8:00 AM: Breakfast will be in the hotel restaurant with coupons provided. Eat at your leisure during the restaurant s normal operating hours; however, unless you have an early flight or must hit the road at the crack of dawn, try and join everyone for breakfast.
