Herbal Tea Baths or Showers Bathing for health, wellness and rejuvenation To the ancient Greeks and Romans, bathing was an essential part of living in a civilized society. Bathing and cleanliness was so important that public bathhouses were common. Bathing was enjoyed not only for cleanliness, but also for the healing, to promote beauty and rejuvenate the spirit. Even in ancient times society recognized the health and wellness benefits of a bath. Baths were used to soothe sore muscles, calm the nerves, and relieve skin irritations. There were even formulas to soften skin or re energizes the body. Inhaling the vapors from the steam and absorbing the nutrients through the skin exerts a healing effect on the mind as well as the body. Today we can enjoy the same luxury of bathing in the privacy of our own homes. However, in this high-pressured, fastpaced world, a quick shower often replaces tub bathing. You can enjoy the extra health benefits of the herbs by rubbing the moistened bag of herbs on your skin as well as an adding more enjoyment to your bathing experience. The aroma, the massaging of your skin will alleviate the stress, aches and worries out of your body. It is a touch of heaven on earth. There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won't cure, but I don't know many of them. ~ Sylvia Plath 4

Don t have time for an herbal tea bath? Well, you can enjoy an herbal tea shower. I ll show you how. There are several different ways to still enjoy the health benefits of your herbs, even in a shower. Make a bag filled with your herbal tea mixture into a cup of boiling water. Allow to sit for twenty minutes to allow the herbs to release their health benefits and wonderful aroma. Then take the bag and herbal tea mixture into the shower with you. Use the herbal tea bag a washcloth to bathe your body. Rinse with the tea mixture when you are ready to exit the shower. as You can also tie the herbal tea bath bag onto the showerhead and let the water run through the bag. Take your shower. Then rub your body with the soaked herbal bag. Squeeze the moisture from the bag to release all the benefits from the herbs. I love to grow my own herbs and flowers and use them in their natural state. This way I can bruise or crush the herbs immediately before I use them to obtain the most effective results. It is important to note that if you are under a doctor's care, or have allergies to certain herbs or flowers, you should consult with your physician before using bathing with herbs. Take time and treat yourself to a therapeutic herbal tea bath. Enjoy the luxury and the amazing health benefits that teas can have on the skin. Soak in the relaxation and enhance your experience with your favorite cup of tea. Water temperature plays an important role in your bathing experience. For instance, a cold bath or shower is an excellent means of stimulating the system. When you are feeling fatigued or exhausted it is best to start with lukewarm water and slowly change the water to a cooler temperature. When taking a cold bath or shower it should always be for a brief period of time. 5

It is important that you be aware that it is not healthy to use either extremely hot or cold baths for the very old or very young this can cause a shock to the body s system. Cool to warm baths are also stimulating and refreshing. Warm to hot baths are better for relieving aching muscles and joints because the heat relaxes the muscles. Resting after your bath or shower also adds to its beneficial results. Hot baths are also great for inducing perspiration and stimulating the elimination of toxic substances from the body by opening up the pores of the skin. Of course, this should be followed by a cool shower or spray to close the pores. Making Your Own Herbal Tea Bags Make drawstring bags out of cheesecloth, organza or cotton muslin, enough to hold anywhere from 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of your favorite herbal bath recipe. Make them bigger to handle up to 1 cup if you plan on including salts or powered milk to your formula. You want to be able to tie them tightly shut so the loose herbs won t float out into the bath water. Keep in mind that one bag will be used several times and then discarded. I have been making these as gifts for years. My family and friends look forward to trying my new formulas. These herbal tea bags as gifts are thoughtful, inexpensive and impressive. I grow my own herbs in the garden and collect flowers and leaves from the nearby woods and neighbors gardens. Here are instructions to making your own herbal tea bags. For those of you that do not want to be bothered, you can purchase special large sized sealable tea bags made for the bath. These are inexpensive to purchase and are sealed shut with a hot iron. I prefer using unbleached cotton muslin because it is very inexpensive and is able to stay strong and rigid when wet. If you want to make something more upscale, feel free to use terry cloth washcloths or towels sewn together. Of course, these would be able to be reused and thrown in the washer as needed. Even the most inexperienced individual can do this as a project. You are making something that is going to be used several times and then thrown out. Cut your fabric into 6-inch to 12-inch squares. The size will depend on the amount of ingredients you will be using in your formula. 6

Cut strong string double the length of the bag. You can use cord, strong string or ribbon. This must be able to be strong enough to hold a wet bag of ingredients while under the faucet. Take two layers of fabric and lay them flat. The part that is inside the two layers will be the outside of the bag. Sew down one side of the bag to connect the two pieces together. Open up the fabric so that the inside seam is facing up. Now you have one long piece of material. Fold and iron ¾ inch of material on the top part rectangle. After it is ironed, place the string in this fold. Sew the string into the folded area. This is now the top part of the herbal tea bag. Connect the sides and sew together. Tie the string in a knot so that it can make a drawstring for your bag. You now have a bag that can be filled with your herbal mixture. Take a paper funnel and fill the bags with your herbal formula. You can pull the drawstring tight or sew the ingredients into the bag and just use the string as a handle. No time or patience to sew? Shop at Mountain Rose Herbs where you will find the perfect cotton muslin bath bags. If you are giving as a gift, be sure to make a list of ingredients and directions on how to use your gift. (I have made this special formula herbal tea bag with---. Hang it over the faucet or shower head when bathing and allow the water to run through the bag. You will experience the fragrance and properties of the herbs. If you would like to enhance your experience, please feel free to use the bag as a scrubber. Hang this up to dry when done. Storing while it is still damp may go moldy. You can enjoy the benefits of this luxury herbal formula up to three times before discarding) 7

Other ingredients that you may consider adding to your herbal tea bath formula to enjoy the amazing health benefits that teas mixed with these can have on the skin. Celtic sea salt- healing properties, exfoliating Citrus peels Orange peels can make your skin glow and tones your skin. Lemon peel has anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties. Tangerine is soothing to the skin. Cocoa - Now you are not restricted to simply eating chocolate, you can enjoy it calorie free. Just the smell will stimulate a body's 'feel good' chemicals and a sense of wellbeing. Just include it in some of your herbal tea bath recipes. The scent of chocolate is linked to increasing the serotonin levels in the brain. Dark chocolate has recently been promoted for its health benefits, as it seems to possess substantial amount of antioxidants that reduce the formation of free radicals. A person does not need to eat "chocolate" in the conventional sense to reap the health benefits: add cocoa powder into your bath recipes and the health results will be the same. Enjoy the benefits of cocoa and tea at one time. There are psychological and sensory benefits to pampering your body's outside with chocolate too. Cocoa contains antioxidants like vitamins A and E, which increase blood circulation, and that cocoa butter moisturizes and soothes chapped skin. I have included a very special recipe at the end of this book for you to try. 11

Epsom Salts- These salts have been used for centuries by individuals to alleviate skin conditions, calm the nervous system and draw toxins out of the body. Epsom salts contain magnesium, which is the second most important element in our bodies. The skin absorbs the magnesium and enhances the systems in our body. Just add ½ cup to a bag. Essential oils - There are psychological and sensory benefits to pampering your body with the scents of flowers and herbs. For an extra added bonus for your bath, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to your formula. It will affect all your senses. Honey - Used by Cleopatra, Honey helps the skin attract and retain moisture. Because of its high sugar content and low ph properties, makes honey an antimicrobial agent, inhibiting the growth of certain bacteria. For those individuals with allergies, especially if you suffer allergic reactions resulting in skin rashes; it is recommended to use a honey that is produced locally. Just add ½ cup to your bath water. Powdered Milk - Milk has been used to nourish the skin for centuries. Cleopatra is said to have bathed herself in camel s milk. Adding milk to your bath is one of the easiest ways to improve the look and feel of your skin instantly. Milk works wonders for the skin because it contains lactic acid. This functions as a gentle cleanser for skin. Milk also contains beta hydroxy acid, which acts as an excellent skin exfoliant. This removes the old skin cells allowing the newer vibrant skin cells underneath to shine through. Add 2 to 3 cups to your formula. 12

Rolled Oats- Coarsely ground in the blender first, for moisturizing and soothing. Traditional Teas Black, green, oolong, rooibos and white teas are great for the skin and would enhance the effects of the other herbs. Herbal Tea Bath Recipes These herbal tea bath recipes will stimulate all of your senses, leaving you feeling wonderfully refreshed, relaxed, and calm and your spirit renewed. The essential oils suggested will complement the herbs. Using these oils is optional. Including a few tablespoons of Celtic sea salt or Rolled Oats can enhance your bathing experience. Of course, the addition of any traditional loose-leaf tea would have a synergistic effect. You will find many of these ingredients at Mountain Rose Herbs.
