Rules in Hiragana (1) Long vowel sounds (aa, ii, uu, ee, oo) Long vowel sounds can be written TWO ways: 1: aa, ii, uu, ee, oo OR shortened to a vowel with a line above it: ā, ī, ū, ē, ō aa is represented by ADDING あ For example: okaasan (mother) è おかあさん Your turn: māmā (so so) ii is represented by ADDING い For example: oniisan (older brother) è おにいさん Your turn: ojīsan (grandfather) uu is represented by ADDING う For example: yuugata (early evening) è ゆうがた Your turn: taifū (typhoon) kūki (air) oo is represented by ADDING う For example: sayoonara è さようなら Your turn: byōin (hospital) kyō (today) In some words it is traditionally written as お For example: ookii (big) è おおきい Your turn: too (ten) toori (street) (2) Double consonants (kk, pp, ss, and tt) Double consonants (kk, pp, ss, and tt) are represented by ADDING a small つ (tsu) For example: gakkou (school) è がっこう Your turn: ikkai (once) roppyakuen (600) ikko (one small object) juppun (10 min) kippu (ticket) irasshaimase (welcome) 10
(3) wa as a particle is written using は (ha), not わ (wa).
