1-1 Part One: Introducing the Kanji New kanji characters are listed at the beginning of each of the first 61 chapters, in a table titled New Kanji. Using the reference numbers printed before the kanji, you can find information about these characters in the Kanji Catalogue near the back of the book, including memorable kanji descriptions and cues intended to help you remember kanji pronunciations. The small number printed in parentheses after each kanji in the New Kanji table tells you how many of the different pronunciations that can be associated with that kanji are actually used in the chapter where the table appears. After reading about the kanji in the Kanji Catalogue but before starting to read a chapter we suggest that you look at this table and try to recall all of the pronunciations. You can determine whether or not your pronunciations are correct by referring to the second table further down on the page, titled Kanji Pronunciations. After you have become at least somewhat familiar with all of the kanji pronunciations that will be used in the chapter, you will be ready to start reading. If you need information about a particular kanji but cannot locate it in the New Kanji table in the chapter that you are reading (suggesting that it was introduced in a previous chapter), you may determine the kanji s pronunciation by referring to its romaji equivalent in the right column and then turn to the Kanji Pronunciation Index starting on page 523 in order to identify the reference number that is associated with that kanji. Using this reference number, you will be able to look up the kanji s information in the Kanji Catalogue. Please be careful to keep the romaji text in the right column covered with a piece of paper, or at least with your thumb, until after you have done your best to read the Japanese text in the left column. If you are reading an even-numbered page (2, 4, 6, etc.), another way to conceal the text in the right column is to fold the page over gently as you read.

1-2 Chapter 1 New Kanji # 53 見 (1)* # 23 手 (1) # 221 紙 (2) # 415 書 (1) # 338 何 (2) # 123 本 (1) # 105 分 (2) # 172 下 (3) # 162 名 (1) # 157 前 (1) *The numbers printed in parentheses after each kanji in the table above indicate the number of different pronunciations that are employed for that kanji in the current chapter. The actual pronunciations can be found in a second table at the bottom of this page. Before starting to read a chapter, we suggest that you look up all of the new kanji in the Kanji Catalogue, paying particular attention to the DESCRIPTION and CUES sections of the entries. You may then return to the chapter and use these two tables to review your knowledge of the kanji pronunciations before starting to read. Note that you will often encounter additional pronunciations for the kanji in subsequent chapters. For example, although 見 is pronounced mi in this chapter, it can also be pronounced ken, and you will first encounter that pronunciation in Chapter 21. 1. パスポートを見せてください 2. はい どうぞ 3. 手紙をすぐ書きます 4. これは何ですか 5. ハチミツです 6. 本を見せてください 7. あれは何ですか 8. 分かりません Pasupooto wo misete kudasai.
